The 2006 world cup match between England and Portugal is the match I will never forget. Because I'm a Manchester united fan on that day I wasn't supporting any of the two teams since the two best players and most loved players of Manchester united were playing against each other , Rooney representing England and Ronaldo Representing Portugal and Beckham a former player and a legend of Manchester united also playing for England.

Even though Portugal were having world class players like; Figo, Ronaldo and Carvalho but many people expected England to win the game because most of their players were at the peak of their career. England were having players like; Terry, Ferdinand , Ashley Cole, Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard. So many expected England to beat Portugal easily and even go on to win the trophy considering the players they have.

England's trouble started when they lost Beckham to injury immediately after half time. Little did they dey know the worse worse was coming on the 62nd minute. Rooney was given a red card after stamping Ricardo Carvalho. But what surprised the fans was Ronaldo telling the referee to send Rooney off. Considering their relationship and Ronaldo playing for one of the best teams in England (Manchester united) people were surprise of Ronaldo's reaction.

England manage to end game with a goalless draw after extra time with a man down. But to surprise of the fans Lampard, Carragher who scored their penalties were ask to take it again which they all missed it after taking it for the second time. It was really a bad day for England. Even though Hugo Viana and Petit missed theirs Ronaldo, Simao and Postiga made sure to score theirs to take Portugal to the next stage of the competition.

But the hero of the day was Ricardo the goal keeper of Portugal who saved three penalties. Ricardo is the first and only keeper to make Three penalty save in a world cup penalty shootout.

It was really a bad day for England and Rooney because they were considered the favorites to win the game and also pay back Portugal for eliminating them in the Euros 2004 competition these made them very disappointed.
