As a Leeds United fan I thought I'd write a post about what being a Leeds United fan means to me.
We are the loudest, most original fans in English football. Many of the songs and chants used by other team's fans originated on the terraces of Leeds United's Elland Road ground.
The camaraderie in the stands at Elland Road is unreal. Leeds fans are brutal in their opposition to away teams and fans particularly Manchester United who are affectionately known as "Scum," only there is absolutely no affection!!
We have a chant "We are the Champions, Champions of Europe!" This stems from the European Cup Final of 1975 when Leeds played Bayern Munich in Paris. Leeds feel they were cheated out of this championship by some horrendous refereeing decisions. A blatant penalty was not awarded and a goal for Leeds that had been allowed was disallowed after the real referee on the night, Bayern's legendary Franz Beckenbauer used his power and influence to get the goal disallowed for offside. The feeling of injustice amongst Leeds United fans has stuck with us over many decades hence the "We are the Champions, Champions of Europe!" chant which is much misunderstood by fans of other teams and I hope this explanation goes some way to explaining this.
Leeds have a song, our song "Marching On Together" which is completely unique to us as a team. A few team's fans have sung it and I take this as a compliment that other fans aspire to us as a fanbase.
Leeds fanbase worldwide is huge, we are everywhere with our fair share of famous fans from Russel Crow to The Kaiser Chiefs from Game of Thrones Jamie Lannister to Chad Hurley (YouTube co-founder).
Leeds United are now co-owned by the San Francisco 49s who are going to help fund a new 55,000 possibly 60,000 expansion of Elland Road so the future for this famous old football club and these amazing fans is hopefully very bright.
One last thing, my personal gratitude to the giant of man our manager Marcelo Bielsa who has been adopted by the City of Leeds as one of our own. He is a true genius and amazing human being.
Nice man, it saddens that leeds has lost it glorious days. Back in the days leeds used to be the best club in Europe, but am glad you guys are back in the premium league.
