The name " #Australia" is derived from the Latin word " #australis", which means "southern". The name was originally suggested by the British explorer #Matthew #Flinders, who sailed around the continent in 1801-1803 and proposed that the southern landmass be called "Terra Australis". This name was later simplified to just "Australia", and was officially adopted when the country became a federation in 1901.
