I am Mahnoor from Pakistan. I hope everything is going well. Thanks to Allah, I am also fine. Today, I am participating a new contest which is about the science of space. Thanks @chasad75 for organizing such a knowledgeable contest.
The term "science of space" refers to the study of the outer space. This field commonly known as astronomy explores celestial phenomena such as stars, planets, galaxies, and other cosmic phenomena. It various discipline including astrophysics, cosmology and planetary science aimed at understanding the universe and its components.
Briefly explain the difference between a comet and an asteroid.
Let's talk about comets first
πͺβ¨COMETSβ¨πͺ
A comet is a space object consisting of ice, dust, rocks and organic material. As it approach the Sun its icy surface melts, forms a bright cloud of gas and dust called a coma, along with a tail that extends away from the Sun due to solar wind. Comets also called "dirty snowballs" have elongated orbits occasionally bringing them close to the Sun leading to impressive celestial displays visible from Earth.
πͺβ¨AESTEROIDβ¨πͺ
An asteroid is a small rock or metal object that orbits the Sun. Unlike comet asteroids don't have ice so they don't develop tails or glowing clouds when they get close to the Sun. They usually have bumpy shape and are mostly found in a zone between Mars and Jupiter called the asteroid belt but some are in other parts of space too.
Comets and asteroids both are different fromeach other in there composition appearance orbits. Comets have long stretched-out orbits that swing them far from the Sun and then back in close again. On the other hand, asteroids typically have more circular orbits.
What is the name of the closest star to Earth, other than the Sun, and in which constellation is it located?
The closest star to Earth other than the Sun is Proxima Centauri. Its discovery by Robert Innes in 1915. Proxma Centauri is in a group of stars called Alpha Centauri. It found in the Centaurus constellation. Proxma Centauri is a small, faint star known as a red dwarf. Even though it's the closest star system to us you can't see it without a telescope because it is very dim.
Name one of the moons of Jupiter and describe one interesting feature about it.
Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, have 79 moons including the four largest ones known as the Galilean moons : Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system, with over 400 active volcanoes. Its surface is full of colorful plains, mountains, and sulfur compounds. These volcanoes spit out stuff that makes the ground look yellow, orange, red and white. It's like a painting with vibrant colors all over.
What is a light-year, and why is it used as a unit of measurement in astronomy?
A light-year is how far light travel in a year. Its a way to talk about really big distances in space. Astrnomers use light-years because space is so vast and distances between stars and galaxies are huge. Using light-years help us understand these distances better. In space regular units like mile or kilometer are too small to measure big distances between star and galaxies. Light-years are used instead. light travels super fast, about 300,000 kilometers per second (186,000 miles per second), it help us measure these vast distances more accurately.
