The Tamil diaspora around the world as well as the Indian state of Tamil Nadu celebrate Pongal, a four-day harvest festival. As the beginning of the sun's six-month trip north, it is traditionally observed in the Tamil month of Thai (January-February) (Uttarayana). The event, which honors the Hindu sun god Surya, represents the victory of good over evil.

The preparation of the "Pongal" meal, which is made of rice, lentils, and milk and is sweetened with either jaggery or sugar, is the main attraction of the Pongal celebration. Then, in remembrance of a plentiful harvest, this dish is presented to the gods.

Lord Indra, the rain god, is honored on "Bhogi," the festival's opening day. To celebrate the beginning of a brand-new year, people throw out their old belongings and bring in new ones. A bonfire is lit to commemorate the occasion, into which are thrown outdated clothing, books, and other belongings. This is done as a sign of new beginnings and a fresh start.

The festival's second day, "Pongal," which honors Surya, the solar god, is its focal point. Early in the morning, people take baths before preparing the Pongal meal, which is subsequently served to the sun. In order to symbolize abundance, the dish is cooked on a clay pot that is set in a field. Once prepared, the Pongal is brought to the temple and offered to the sun god as a sign of appreciation for the abundant harvest.

"Maattu Pongal," the third day, is devoted to cows and other agricultural animals. In appreciation for their contribution to farming, they are decorated and given special food. The bulls and cows are paraded around the streets dressed in floral garb and having their horns painted in vibrant hues to commemorate the occasion. Delicacies are also fed to cows. Jallikattu, a bull-taming competition that takes place in villages, is also attended by participants.

Families get together on the fourth day, known as "Kaanum Pongal," to visit friends and family. Additionally, it is the day when family reunions take place in adjacent locations.

The procession includes floats representing the cultures and traditions of the state's several regions.
