"Thisara roars! The Sri Lankans charge down the pitch and grab Sanga. This is as comprehensive a win as you get.. Malinga comes in and jumps over the lot.. Mahela hugs Dilshan, and Dilshan hugs Sanga. Kohli hugs Sanga. Sri Lanka has broken the jinx in style and what a time to do it!"
It's been 10 years since this magical day of Sri Lankan Cricket. This is the climax of what I have witnessed (from 2005). Cheers to those memories and our childhood heroes and living legends!
This is special. After trying so many times, being consecutive runners-up in the 2007 and 2011 Cricket World Cups, and in the ICC T20 World Cups in 2009 and 2012, this gotta be ours. And it was the last T20I appearance of all-time greats Mayiya and Sanga. And this was a total team performance in the whole series, with no highest run scorers or wicket-takers. But everyone did their bits as much as possible. Mayiya, Kule, Mali, Anji, Hera, Sachithra, Thiri, Kusal, Dila, Thisara, Mendis, Sanga and so on.
The whole series was a perfect execution of tactics and playing sensible Cricket including the finals. The final was against India under Dhoni's captaincy in Mirpur, Dhaka.
Anji got the first breakthrough, but Kohli and Rohit carried the way. To favor us, Yuvi was out of form scoring just 11 off 21 balls. Anyway, after 16 overs India was 111/2 with Kohli and Yuvi batting and with a lot of power hitters to come. But we witnessed the greatest death over display of all time(for me), which gave us the World Cup.
It's not just Mali and Kule, but Sachithra started with just 4 runs, and the pace duo just put the batters on the back foot. Dhoni or Kohli couldn't score freely. That's the perfect execution of a perfect plan.
With that target, it was a comfortable chase even though India had some moments. My man Sanga carried throughout the innings and finished it, even though he failed in the rest of the series. He was very emotional after that win and his eyes were proud which represented the whole nation. I have never seen that kind of celebration from him throughout his career.
The payers were happy. The people were happy. It was a simpler time, where we dominated World Cricket and we had a bunch of Cricketers who were loved by al cricket lovers around the world.
