I’m here to share my first article of 2025. It’s about the beautiful mountain hike to Wangedigala, a stunning mountain located near Kalupahana village, on the Balangoda–Belihuloya road. This was my first visit to Wangedigala. The hike took place in December during the rainy season.
The hike started by passing through a beautiful pine forest. Around 800m of the trail runs through the lush brown-colored forest floor, looks like a brown carpet covering the area.
During the hike, we enjoyed beautiful scenery around the picturesque Kalupahana area. This area is underrated among both foreign tourists and locals. The village of Kalupahana is a paradise, surrounded by towering green mountains covered in grass and mist.
After hiking for nearly 1km, we were able to see Sri Lanka’s tallest waterfall, Bambarakanda Falls. However, we had to wait a while for a clear view due to the misty environment.
We managed to complete 70% of the hike but couldn’t proceed further due to heavy rain and slippery paths. It took us almost 3 hours to reach that point, and we then decided to hike back down in the heavy rain. The area is full of leeches, so anyone planning to hike Wangedigala should take precautions. I’ve posted some pictures below to show my experience with the leeches.
If you’re planning a hike to Wangedigala, it’s best to check the weather forecast and plan accordingly. And this area doesn’t have any grocery store around the area there is a pace at start point which we can order lunch and dinner it was a small stall and food was really delicious and like a homemade food and place is highly recommended. Below are some beautiful clicks I captured during the hike.
Thank you!
