My idea about the current situation in our country

Hello Steemians!

In Sri Lanka, we always talk about our great history. I have learned Sri Lankan history and I know our ancestors have done many more great things. But the problem in our current society is that most people only know to talk. They are incapable of doing the right thing. Simply they are only thinkers, not doers.

I like to practice what lord buddha has taught us. It’s not like the traditional way, but I have a simple understanding of what’s right or wrong. In some teachings, we have taught about the “Anana Sukaya”. That means the happiness we gain by not having loans. I hope you understand my point. My opinion is that most Sri Lankans do not have a clear idea about managing their income. That also reflects the current situation caused by the irregular financial decisions taken by our politicians. The problem here is that they only manage the present condition and they do not have any plan for the future.

What I believe is that our people have the courage to withstand any problematic situation. As far as I know, resigning a government before its time comes never happened in Sri Lanka. So it needs some idea about what’s the next thing to do. As you all know the voice of our people has become massive pressure on this existing government. Like in other times, since this economic crysis does not have any short term solution, my opinion is that they will have to go out and a guardian government will have to rise with the right people in the right positions. In that way, we can cut down the unnecessary costs reserved for non-priority projects. In this current time, people do not have options. Most of them are trying ways to get at least 2 meals per day. That’s how bad this situation is. We have to take care of our people first. Unfortunately, our government do not care about us. Because of this reason people are gathering for justice. Hope is what makes us live. So, let’s hope.

@imanthadd, I feel sorry for your nation because you people don't seem to get it.

Always remember you deserve the government you voted in. It simply means it is you, the the people who voted the government, who is the reason for this crisis.
If you still don't get it read this very instructive article by Prof. Asoka N.I. Ekanayaka: THE ATTRIBUTES OF THE 7 MILLION WHO DESTROYED SRI LANKA

Look at Singapore. It is an island nation which has far lesser natural resources than yours and is much younger than your country as it came into existence only in 1965. It is today one of the richest nations in the world. Singapore was part of Malaysia and separated from it in 1965 because of differences in their approach to governance.

Today, Singapore is far ahead of Malaysia in every aspect in less than 60 years. Singaporeans eschewed racism, religiosity, nepotism and corruption and embraced an open society and meritocracy. They voted governments that stood for these principles rather than race, religion or some parochial interest. On the other hand Malaysia took a similar path your nation took and is also on the verge of collapse.

What you say is correct. People here are innocent and helpless. I can not imagine where we are headed to...

Innocent? How can you call people who are corrupt and lack compassion for the sufferings of others innocent?

Here is a reminder of what is your society is like from your own Prof Asoka:

"This is not surprising given that Sri Lanka is a country where corruption is ubiquitous. It is said that people get the government they deserve.

More likely people get governments that mirror their own corrupted nature and moral depravity. Like begets like.

The late Justice Mark Fernando once clarified that corruption is not merely bribery and corruption but extends to extravagance, waste, neglect, and every form of malpractice, dishonesty, and abuse, misuse, and unreasonable exercise of power . . . and indeed anything and everything done or left undone, which results in the rights of the People being denied or impaired”.

What a magnificent all encompassing definition ! No wonder the great man was himself the victim of corruption in being denied promotion to Chief Justice which he richly deserved and shamefully bypassed in favour of one who brought that high office into disrepute"

On lack of compassion, this is what your Prof Asoka, had to say,

"Thirdly today’s disenchanted 6.9 million might be defined by their innate selfishness and lack of compassion. True, they may be suffering today. But in voting as they did they were guilty of being callously indifferent to the far greater sufferings of others. Hundreds of weeping women may be pining for their husbands and sons who disappeared and were probably murdered years ago. But they were not my relations so who cares ? That’s the attitude."

On your statement ...

I can not imagine where we are headed to...

For starters, you may want to reflect deeply on the points raised in the article written by Prof Asoka. Share this article with as many others as possible and invite them to reflect and start discussions on the way forward. If you don't you are not going to get any meaningful change for the better. The Sri Lankan psyche needs healing. That healing can take place only if you honestly reflect on your past transgressions and discuss them openly and candidly.

The so-called "innocent" need to wise up. If they don't as Pushkin asks, "Why should cattle have the gift of freedom, comfort and wealth?" (italic mine)

Also in next presidential election people must not do the same mistake for third time

Yes. And let's hope they will not do that again.

they do not have any plan for the future.

This is the very reason that our country turns out to be like this now. we should have a proper long tern plan that would address all the root causes of the current crisis.. at least now.

You're very correct dr.

Lets have a hope to see a silver line through the dark clouds...

Yes ayye😢

Sri Lanka needs to find a way to get dollars with this current situation. Although politicians take a loan, They put half of it in their account. That is why we must choose the right politician.

You are correct friend. It’s the major cause for this kind of situation. 😞
