September 20th became another memorable day in my life as it's the International Day for University Games (IDUS). University of Colombo was the host for the Sri Lankan celebration on IDUS and sports captains from other universities had also been invited for the program. I was also able to participate to the program by representing University of Kelaniya.
The program started with our favorite part of any sports program which is receiving the themed t-shirt of the event. It was a white t-shirt with IDUS symbols and descriptions. No need to mention that white colour and ground has a very toxic relationship, so I knew that I have to be extra careful with the shirt.
After changing into that white t-shirt, we attended the opening ceremony which was held in the indoor stadium of UOC. As soon as the openinonh ceremony was over we were teamed into four groups to start the sports activities. Teaming us into different groups helped us to get to know new people from other universities, rather than grouping with the same uni team. I got into the team orange and we named ourselves as team bravo. There were eight teams and we were expected to compete with each other. We were moved into the ground after few warming-up games.
The first main event was mixed netball competition. We had two girls in our team who were the captains of the netball team of their respective universities, so we have to select two more girls and three boys to fill the team. I had to play netball matches as well since I have aged netball before. We came upto semi-finaks but wasn't lucky enough to be selected into finals. I was pretty much tired after playing netball in noon because I played it after years. But when I heard the next event I wasn't tired anymore. It was a mixed relay and my comfort zone. We needed four boys and four girls for the relay and we quickly selected eight members from our team. As I wanted, we won the first place in relay.
We had a small award-giving ceremony after conducting all the events. And we were the first runners-up from all the events conducted that day. But the program wasn't over yet. We were informed that our host university has planned a dj party after the program. Well.. it wasn't quite the thing for a selective introvert like me. So I became the phone keeper of the people who joined the dance floor.
After spending some time there, we headed back to our uni. We were all very active from morning to the late evening, so everyone was pretty tired by the time we got into the uni bus. But the boys were not too tired which could prevent them from singing songs. So we had a live performance throughout the time we were going to the uni. This is how we all happily celebrated IDUS. Wished the other team members could have this moment instead of the captains alone
Thanks for reading.
Have a nice day!
