We had to conduct a teaching camp at a nearby school as an assignment and that was an experience that made me learn lots of things.
The competency level of the students that we dealt with lil below the average. However, that didn’t mean that their talent and potential are any less. They only needed to discover it. We got Grade 10 class and we knew that it was not gonna be that easy to tackle them. and yeah, the group I got was not the easiest kids I have worked with. But as I worked with them, I realized, they needed only some additional love, attention and encouragement for them to work hard.
The best thing I saw in those kids is everyone help everyone, be it with spelling or telling words, everyone was actively helping each other. And they were very loyal too. When someone was not willing to cooperate, they help me to persuade them to complete their work. The best reward came at the last.

There was this one kid who used to tell that he was not capable of doing that activity when I gave them individual work. In the first activity, he tried to play some tricks until I reminded him our age gap is not that great, so I can read through their actions. He completed the first activity after I nagged a lot. I rewarded him with a high-five… For the second activity, he said he would do only half and I asked him to do 3/4th of it and he agreed without any resistance. I reminded him that they could do anything as long as they set their mind into it. For the third activity, he tried his best and completed it. fourth activity was supposed to be a group activity. He himself reached out to me and I told he wanted to try doing it alone. I agreed to it since he reassured me he could manage it with his own. I was more than happy when he came to me with this work. He too was proud to show it to me and listen to my praises because he did it on his own. I felt so fulfilled when he completed the work on his own.
This was my favourite encounter in the classroom. It also taught me a good lesson. They only need love and attention and little encouragement to unleash their potential. I really hope these kids will gain their confidence and go to higher places in the future.
