Ever since the trailer of “The Little Mermaid” was released it was met with lots of mixed reactions. It became a center of topic among the Disney enthusiasts as it become a source from backlashes, praises and mixed feelings. The Little Mermaid was my second favourite Disney animated movie when I was a kid, so I looked really forward for this movie. I became more excited about its release because my current research is connected to Disney movies.

The trailer indeed created a tiktok trend where the people of colour reacts to the Ariel in the movie as this is one of the few instants where a Black person got casted into a Disney princesses. Some praised it telling that if they saw such a representation in Disney when they were kids, it would have really increased their confidence and self-esteem. It opens up kids’ minds to a new perspective since a young age. At the same time it got accused of blackwashing. Some Disney fans felt it is unjust to change the plot of one of most loved Disney animated movies. They further commented that the producers could have created new plot, instead of changing a major element of a well-established plot in the name of inclusivity. Their argument was just like we cannot portray Moana with blonde hair, they cannot portray Ariel with a Dark skin because it goes against the original narrative.

Amidst all these praises and accusations, The Little Mermaid became one of the most watched movie of the year. I also went with lots of excitement and expectation for the movie. It was good overall, however I expected more from it and I didn’t get that wow factor in it. what do y’ll think of this movie?

In general, I don't have a problem if a character is recast as a different color/race/whatever for artistic reasons. However, I really hate the double standard. If you took Disney's The Princess and the Frog and recast the lead as a white person for a live action movie there would be outcry of whitewashing, racism, cultural appropriation, and who knows what else. But going in the other direction is supposed to be fine. At least that's the environment we are currently living in in the U.S. Not sure how it is perceived in other parts of the world.

I don't have too much interest in seeing a live action Little Mermaid. I did see the live action Aladdin and it was pretty good. I really missed Robin Williams as the Genie though. I would prefer that Disney work on creating new classics vs. remaking old ones.

Your last line sums up all what I have to say. it's disrespectful to the original work when major elements are changed when remaking old classics. it would have been better if they could create new classics to match new trends rather than forcing new trends on old ones in the name of "remaking".
