The only thing came into my mind was "Harry potter"!
No suprise,As a potterfan from 9 years my interest towards harry potter is eternal.It made my childhood wonderful and magical and Its not just a movie to me its kind of a subject that I can study all over my life that I never get bored of learning.
Harry potter book series written by British Author J.K Rowling, came first before the movies and she finished writing the series before the first movie release.

Harry potter and the prisoner of Azkaban
Harry potter and the goblet of fire
Harry potter and order of the phoenix

Among 8 harrypotter movies released so far my favourite movie is the 3rd one.Harry potter and the prisoner of Azkaban.Due to certain reasons this movie is significant to me. Let me tell the story in brief and the significance of this movie.
Young harry potter spend his third year in Hogwarts.The golden trio Harry,Ron, Hermione faces series of adventures as usual.Harry got to know that the terrible wizard escaped from Azkaban prison is not the murderer of his parents but his god father.Also he is an animagus,man who can turn into an animal.The movie has several new things including the Knight bus that come to help Harry, marauder's map which was owned by Harry's father previously.Time tuner of Hermione that helped them to travel through time.Dementors,the guards of Azkaban.Prof.Lupin,the new teacher for defence against dark art who later reveals as a werewolf,patronus charm,buckbeek, thunderbolt broom stick and many more.
Under the production of David Heyman and Chris Colombus,starring Danniel Radclife(Harry),Emma Watson (Hermione Granger),Rupert Grint(Ron), the movie had release in 2004. The film runs over 142 mins.Cris Colombus brings the whole movie series in to whole new level through this movie and it gives a more regular picture to the audiance about the wizarding world.

Easily the best one of the series. The reason is something like you said. First two films have a light sweet mood, and this film takes a large turn, giving the series a whole darker tone. This film is the only one directed by the legendary filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron, and he does it on point.
