Its Kurumba time! | 5% for sl-charity

Once or twice a month Gunadasa comes to our home to pluck coconuts. I used to ask him to pluck some young coconuts too. I love to drink kurumba and eat the tender coconut flesh. Today Gunadasa plucked some young coconuts as I requested. My wife introduced an add-on this time; Kithul treacle.

Upto this day I have never tasted young coconut flesh with Kithul treacle. We carefully removed all the flesh into a bowl (why waste even a small amount?). And then added some Kithul treacle. Belive me, it tasted so amazing. And the coconut water was so refreshing.

As Sri Lankans we use at least one coconut a day for cooking. But most of the times we throw away coconut water. Since it is too easy to find coconuts in a tropical country like Sri Lanka people don't see much value in it.

Coconut water is the ultimate drink of all drinks. Here are some facts about coconut water.

1. Packed with nutrients
Coconut water consists 94% of water and very little amount of fat (not in the flesh). One cup of coconut water contains,
a. 46 calories
b. 9g of Carbohydrates
c. 3g of fiber
d. 2g of protein
e. Vitamin C: 10% of daily requirement
f. Magnesium: 15% of daily requirement
g. Manganese: 17% of daily requirement
h. Potassium: 17% of daily requirement
i. Sodium: 11% of daily requirement
j. Calcium: 6% of daily requirement

2. Have antioxidants
In simple words antioxidants repair the damaged cells. If you are a hard worker your cells may have stressed out and damaged. Antioxidants in coconut water can repair the damaged and stressed cells.

3. Good for diabetes
Coconut water can lower blood sugar and maintain the balance. Magnesium in coconut water can increase the insulin sensitivity

4. Can prevent kidney stones
Coconut water can prevent crystal (stone) formation. Also it can prevent crystals from attaching to the kidneys and other parts of urinary tract.

5. Good for your heart
Coconut water can reduce blood cholesterol, liver fat and triglyceride. If you are lazy to do some workouts just drink some coconut water everyday.

6. Can reduce high blood pressure
Potassium in coconut water can reduce high blood pressure. Also it reduces the risk of blood clotting.

7. Best sports drink
Coconut water is better than most of the high-electrolyte sports drinks. It can restore electrolytes like Potassium, Magnesium, Sodium and Calcium better than water and most of the sports drinks.

In our place we don't waste coconut water or flesh. But today I learnt about the advantages of them. Thank you for this article
