How We Planned to Select Colors for Walls

Last time I discussed how much we put effort into planning things in the best way. Today I will write an extension to that, describing how we managed to select colors for our house. I must say we wish if we could take the assistance of an interior designer on this matter, but really we didn't get the opportunity to do it.

Initially, our plan was to do the all walls in pure white and even the outside walls. But later we had a slight interest on paint some random walls in a different color. When we are researching the matter we realized that we can apply a different color to one specific wall.

Lyra Studio Videos also gave us some knowledge on how to pick up colors. A single wall different from other wall colors is called as an "accent wall". Accent walls are suitable to enhance the look of a specific feature or add color over neutral colors.

After some research, we decide to do some accent walls in our house.

As we learned, shorter, windowless, or plain walls are most suitable as Accent Walls. We decided to add color to each bedroom and also to a wall in our dining room. The painter also helped us select walls to paint. According to his theory, if you need to separate a wall from another wall, or if you need to highlight the element inside a wall, you can go for an accent wall. As an example, if you want to highlight the staircase, you can use a significantly different color to the wall adjacent to the staircase.

The next challenge was selecting colors. First of all we discussed the colors that we prefer and not. We wanted to give maximum calmness to the living room but same time we wanted colors to match the furniture. So we had to think again and again.

But Pinterest brought us a solution. When surfing Pinterest we noticed plenty of color schemes with matching colors. We checked hundreds of them until we find the color in our common desire. Once both agree, we started to plan furniture and colors based on them.

Also, the following tool from Nippon to simulate the colors we needed. You can pick a color and you can simulate a wall and check how it looks in different places such as the bedroom living room, study room, etc. The site is a Singapore site, but once you get a clear understanding of the color, it is easy to find similar colors from the same or different brands.

The next challenge was the cost. The paints with colors cost more than white paints anyway. Now the cost is even higher. So we had to check for a place to buy for old prices. Finally, we were able to purchase colors from a different brand for the old price. It is not 100% the same as the colors we picked from the tool, but we could find 90% matching colors for them.
