It is time to engage with contests as Steem Sri Lanka Community is again starting its contest series with Announcing Contest: It's My Home Garden| Steem Sri Lanka 3G Contest Series| Week 01 organized by @prasadi. I am inviting you all to have a look and share your thoughts on this with us all. So, this is my entry for the contest!
People have many hobbies. And they are changed time to time with the amount of leisure time available, age, mentality, health conditions etc. can be the reason for this. Gardening is done mainly by housewives or by senior citizens who have time after their retirements from jobs. But in my home, gardening is done mainly by me. But my family helps me whenever they have time.
If I say something about my garden, I live in Ambalangoda, a town in Southern part of Sri Lanka. It is not too much far from the sea and it means I live in coastal area of the county. I have a quite big space to grow things as my home is located in a village area. In size it may be around a quarter acre.
There are many plants in the garden; fruits, vegetables, medical plants, spices, additives to curries and specially my most favorite flowers. There are coconut, mango, banana, guava, king coconut, pomegranate (Delum in Sinhala), Prickly Custard Apple (Anoda in Sinhala), Ceylon Olive, Indian Gooseberry / Amla (Nelli in Sinhala), different types of Oranges, Lovi, Cocoa, Tamarind(Siyambala in Sinhala), Kohomba, Maadam, Moringa, Cinnamon and many other trees in my garden.
As flowers, I prefer Orchids and Anthuriums. Also I have Kadupul, Katarolu, Gerbera, Sandpaper flowers, Senias and many other known and unknown flower plants. Many of them were given by my aunty who is living at Balangoda area in the country. I do not have roses currently and want to have some soon.
As there is enough space, there are many animals are wondering in the garden. Mainly there are many birds in the garden. Namely, Black-hooded Oriole, Woodpeckers, Crows, Yellow billed babblers, Oriental Magpie Robin, Megalaimidae, Coucals, King fishers, Parrots, and even Peacocks come to garden sometimes. Some endemic birds like Indian Paradise Flycatchers were there during last month.
Other than birds, there are squirrels, mongooses, butterflies, bees, civets, lizards, monitor lizards except cats and dogs. Rare appearance of snakes could be seen for past few years. Animals can be seen in the evening mostly. Other than known animals, there are number of insects around.
My garden has a good soil. It is full of nutrition. And my father has a good pair of hands. Whatever he plants, grows very healthily. Some places in my garden has rocks and we have made a pond using set of those rocks. My brother has pet fish there. I had some water flowers like Kumudu, Olu and Manel there few years back. This place is one of my favourite places in the garden.
The main problem occurs when I am in the university. At that time, my father or mother do the watering job the the plants. Or sometimes, when they get busy with their works, I see dried up garden when I return home. That scenery is hard to bear and I usually get angry at that point.
The problem with my home town is, there are heavy rains for consecutive days and then no rain period with heavy sunshine that can dry up everything within two days. So, there must be someone to add water to the plants. I need to find an easier method to watering. I saw @damithudaya had tried one method. I should try one too.
I want to rearrange the garden with more beautiful features. Specially I need more shady areas in the garden. Also I like to add different supporting structures to plants and make them grow in a pattern. For this I need some help from my family but I usually get it lesser in this case.
I want to add a bench to my garden too. Other than these things, I want to grow more flowers. Ah I have a need of planting a Esala tree in my garden which has yellow colour flowers. Also I need to plant an Uguressa tree here. I think I will be able to make them sooner.
I like to read your ideas on this too. So please share your thoughts with us as an entry to the contest.
Thank you!
