Tech Blog #213 | Realme Neo 7: A Flagship Killer that Lacks in Some Departments...

in hive-133716 •  5 months ago

Realme's Neo series came under GT branding. For example, last year, it was Realme GT Neo6, not Realme Neo 6. I don't know the logic behind it, but it is kind of weird when considering the naming of devices before. The Realme Neo 7 emerges as a strong contender in the mid-range smartphone market, boasting impressive specifications that could easily lure potential buyers. Let's see whether you are a potential buyer or not.

With its smooth design, measuring just 8.56mm thick and weighing 213 grams, it should feel comfortable in hand. The device is crafted from premium materials, featuring a reinforced metal structure and Crystal Armor Glass, which enhances its durability against drops and scratches. Its aesthetic appeal is fulfilled by vibrant color options—Starship, Submarine, and Meteorite Black—each showcasing complex designs that elevate its visual charm. The in-display fingerprint scanner is welcomed with IP69 dust & water resistance.

The display of the Neo 7 is one of its highlighted features. It sports a 6.78-inch 1.5K LTPO OLED panel with an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120Hz, ensuring a smooth gaming experience and a better battery experience. The peak brightness of 6,000 nits makes it exceptionally readable outdoors, even under direct sunlight. However, the display won't go for 6000 nits in any condition. It is just a selling point.

Under the hood, the Realme Neo 7 is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ chipset, which promises sustained performance for both everyday tasks and gaming. It is the flagship processor by Mediatek from last year. It comes with options for up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and storage variants reaching up to 1TB via UFS 4.0 technology. While these specifications are impressive on paper, real-world performance can sometimes falter under poor thermal management.

The camera system features a triple setup with a 50MP Sony IMX882 sensor equipped with optical image stabilization (OIS), an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 16MP front-facing camera. While the primary camera captures decent images in good lighting conditions, low-light performance leaves much to be desired. The ultra-wide lens is functional but lacks the sharpness expected. At least a 13MP Ultrawide lens with Autofocus is welcome in this price range.

Battery life is one of the Neo 7's strongest suits, housing a massive 7,000mAh battery that supports fast charging at 80W. This combination ensures users can easily get through a day of heavy usage without reaching for a charger. Additionally, Realme promises over 80% battery health even after extensive use for up to five years, which is commendable.

On the software front, the Neo 7 runs on Realme UI 6.0 based on Android 15. While it offers several AI features and customization options, users may experience bloatware that ruins the overall experience. Furthermore, Realme's track record for timely updates raises concerns about long-term software support. But Realme UI is polished and most users won't feel the need of Android updates.

Priced between ₹45,000 to ₹55,000 (approximately $545 to $670), the Realme Neo 7 positions itself as an affordable flagship alternative. Despite its powerful processor and features that cater to various user needs, it falls short in certain areas like camera performance and software optimization. For those prioritizing battery life and display quality over photographic prowess or software longevity, the Neo 7 remains an appealing option. However, it is better to do market research for competing models that offer more balanced performance across all aspects.
