Newport Beach's infamous Wedge. Not for the faint of heart. Bodysurfing is a whole other world unlike any other wave riding. This is ground zero. The center of that world. They take ownership of the entire place and control everything that happens in the water and on the beach too. Going against the grain is futile. Most of the hardcore crew are in the retirement age group. Many of them are from water polo and lifeguard backgrounds. Team sports and team players. Very different from the surf culture I grew up in back in the 60's and 70's. In those days surfing wasn't a school sport and had barely started being a professional sport at all. When I was in high school jocks and surfers mostly didn't mix. Here at the Wedge board riders are only allowed in the water before 10 am and after 5 pm. If the bodysurfers could swing it there would be no boards allowed at all ever. They are hugely out numbered so they can't manage a full ban. Well I don't know where to go from here with this little bit of story time ... It is a sight to see when it's big . Just don't tell anyone I sent you ;)
