Contest: Short Film Review - The Darkest Blue (2023)

I ask myself if this film should be placed in this community since it is a work of art and about an uncredited artist. I wonder if Brit is on the right track and not mostly focused on the promise she made to her mother.

Brit is an artist because she creates but it is clear that she lacks something important: feeling. The art of capturing what she feels and conveying even more to the viewer is something the gallery owner makes clear to her after which she makes a decision.

Best character

Lee Hudson played by Joseph Phelps
Although Lee did not hold her back, it feels like the film is mostly about him. The desperation he feels, the frustration, guilt and anger are perfectly depicted by how he acts and reacts. When it comes down to it, Brit is nothing more than an introduction.

Like: The lady of the gallery asks Brit what she sees.

Dislike: Brit is not willing to find a job so she can pay her bills. If working students can make it why not working artists? Is a part-time job too much asked? It feels to me Brit lacks the will to succeed. It's like the gallery owner said: It's not about the shape, perfectness...

Original title: The Darkest Blue
Directors: Writer/Director - Andrew Steggall
Producer - Samantha Whitehouse
Cast: Brit Thomas (Fanta Barrie)and Lee Hudson (Joseph Phelps)
Year: 2023
Duration: 13:44 minutes

Word of the director:

As a filmmaker I have often found myself wondering if I can succeed in such a tough, unforgiving industry. But I, much like the main character Brit, have decided that the only way to find out is to give 100% of myself to this pursuit.

This is of course nonsense as the protagonist did not give 100% but decided that faking her death was the way to be recognised!
I have strong doubts about British talent and as we can see, the gallery owner only wants to buy the last painting, the one she expects to have been painted by her soul.
