Good day to you all, I have taken a course on advanced physics and mathematics and the topics in which I am learning I Will love to share it here with everyone, it would be my outmost honour to do so the topics stress, simple stress and strain will be the first of a series of topics to be considered, I hope this knowledge that I am about to drop or share here will be helpful to many of the members in this great community.
STRESS
To explain stress please listen to this; when a body is acted upon by load which can also be called external force, it undergoes what is called deformation and during the time the body is subjected to this load and is undergoing deformation, the body depending on the material type basically resists the tendency of the load or force to deform the body, this internal resistance which the body offers during this time so as to oppose deformation is what we call stress.
Stress can therefore be said to be force of resistance acting per unit area, there are three different types of stress and they are simple or direct stress and indirect stress.
Direct stress is further broken down into three and they are;
(i) Tension (ii) Compression (iii) Shear
Indirect stress is further divided into two categories and they are;
(i) Bending (ii) Torsion
Lastly is combined stress which is basically a combination of the two other stresses acting on a body.
SIMPLE STRESS
Simple stress which is basically another name for direct stress can be defined as the type of stress that is offered by a body or developed by a body which has a direct load acting on it this means there can be simple tension and simple compression occuring if the loading conditions are that of direct loading conditions and then simple shear is one that occurs, when equal, parallel forces acting in opposite direction causes a surface to slide relative to the adjacent surface.
Therefore when loading conditions is not that of direct loading conditions you can be certain that the stress developed or offered is not simple. Simple stress is measured in Newtown per meters square or pascal and is given by force over the cross sectional area.
STRAIN
Strain can simply be defined as the deformation which occurs in a body as a result of the stress on it, it is the change in length of the body as a result of load divided by its original length, that is the length before it was subjected to load or any external force, it has no unit.
