The Gifted

This is a Thai show from GMMTV, which is probably the biggest production house in Thailand. It revolves around magic, superpowers, High school students rebelling and, exposing the corrupt school system in Thailand. THe first season has 13 episodes and the second season also has 13.

The story starts in a high school that divides students according to their abilities. The most intelligent ones get better facilities and those who are in the bottom classes are given the bare minimum. The school has made a clear line of difference between all of the students, and everyone can sense it.

There is a program that is for the students who are above the toppers of the school. That is The Gifted program.
There is a class placement exam where students can either go to the upper or lower classes depending on their grades. All of the students aim to get into the Gifted program. But no one actually knows what the program entails and what they have to do to get in it.

So after the exam students from different grades come together into the gifted program.

Character Introduction (Gifted Students)

  • Pang: The protagonist. He is from the lowest level class. He is the one who mostly makes the decisions for the whole group. He is the first to see the holes in the system. As someone from the lowest level class, he knew how messed up the system was before he even came into the program. His power is having anyone he wants to follow his directions and whatever he says. The most powerful power of the whole program.

  • Wave: He is the brain of the group. He is a person who is highly arrogant, and due to his past, he is reluctant to help anyone and also wants to stand completely on the top. His power is that he can manipulate technology. He is the first to develop his power. He can't seem to grow his power. He can't unlock his full potential.

  • Namtarn: She is also from one of the top classes. Due to her health issues, she never got a chance to have an adventure in life. So, when the program gives her a chance to do it, she doesn't cower from it despite her health or other reasons. Her power is that she can see the past of something or someone once she touches something associated to it. She can't do it much because of her health and also because it takes too much energy.

  • Claire: The drama queen of the group. Someone who is obsessed with looking her best. Has a high pride. Cares for other people. Her power is that she can see the emotions of people through the color that is around them. The downside being that she cant use it a lot because it hurts her eyes.

  • Punn: Someone who is very mysterious. Shows almost no emotions. Highly reserved. Is the pride of the school due to his talent in every club. His power is that he can completely pick up a skill after looking at it once. The downside is that he has to make different personalities in himself to accommodate the overload of knowledge in his head.

  • Ohm: The person who is the happy pill of the group. He uses humor to cope with his troubles. With the fact that he keeps the group close due to his loyal personality. His power is that he can make things disappear. The things or people don't actually disappear and stay where they are but they just can't be seen. The downside being, he cannot bring it back stuff or people if he doesn't have a strong desire to have them back.

  • Korn: Claire's old friend and someone who is the silent force in the group. His picture taking skills capture the things that others cannot. His power is that he has more time than others. He does not need sleep. The downside being that he cant dream or fall asleep, and has to stay awake all night and day without the desire to sleep or getting tired.

  • Mon: She doesn't show much in the drama itself, because she spends most of her time in her club practicing. Her power is her strength. But the downside is that her sweat and other bodily fluids make people who come in contact with her, go crazy and say whatever they're actually thinking.

  • Jo & Jack: They are a pair of twins. They're talent lies in chemistry. With being telepathic they can feel whatever the other twin is feeling.

Each episode revolves around each of the student and how they develop their power. With this they start helping each other and slowly start trusting each other. But the antagonist of the drama is someone very close to them. It is the director of the school.

Since no one outside of the program actually knows what the program entail, these kids start to get alienated in the school, with no one but each other to rely on. When Pang starts questioning the program and why it is so unfair to everyone, he start investigating. When all of them get together to find out the programs truth, many different problems arise. From everyone struggling from the side effects of their power to the director constantly telling them to think of themselves as some kind of God. With all this Pang is dying to find the truth. Even the ministry of Thailand is keen on investing in these kinds for the future of the country. But the kids in the program are against it all. They all just want to be normal kids, who can enjoy the normal things in life.

So they all orchestrated a plan to shut down the program for good. This plan works out and the program is shut down but the director has more tricks up his sleeves.

The Gifted Graduation

The second season of the drama explains how the program is brought back into action by newer kids who want the program. The group has been working in secret to protect the school from kids who want to destroy and defame the school in the name of the gifted program.

When the program is brought back into action, the group isn't happy and want it to shut down again. But due to the lose they suffered due to their last plan which successfully shut down the group, they stay silent. But when a virus releases into the new gifted students, they cant stay quiet anymore. So they set out again to find the truth of the program and how it came to being in the first place.

So this season goes back and forth from the present and past, when the director was building the perfect method to wake the power in the students. With the newer students dying from the virus, to everyone in the upper class breaking up due to their different opinions, this season depicts the problem of the whole program and how unfair it is.

This season completely ties of the series. The ending was perfect. With all the people given the choice to whether they want to be gifted or they want the normal life, it shows how important consent is.

My Favorite Characters

My favorite characters are Pang and Wave. Both of them have extremely positive character development throughout the whole two season. With both of them going from hating and constantly fighting each other to being ready to sacrifice themselves for the sake for the other, is just extremely endearing. The fact that trust is something that is developed between them was probably the best thing in the drams for me. When everyone shunned Pang for trying to protect everyone, only wave stood beside him.

My Rating & Opinion

9.8/10

My opinion is that is probably the best Thai drama I have seen to day. From the storyline to the cast everything was perfect. One thing I would like to change is if they showed a worse ending for the director. For the amount of lives he ruined, his end was extremely lukewarm for me. But the drama was amazing. The script was amazing and the actors did a great job in portraying their characters. It left a very big impact in my mind. The way it showed the corrupt system in education was really beautiful.
