DICK DALE THE KING OF SURF GUITAR POST
Greetings, I am Sergioclanrock, a lawyer, guitarist, singer, lover and student of the Rock and Roll, Blues, Rockabilly, Surf Rock, Punk and Heavy Metal genres among others.
My interest is to publish a post about emblematic musicians as well as videos of Guitar Covers of themes from the 50s to date based on my favorites of the musical genres listed.
To begin I invite you to share and read Part # 1 of a Biographical Post of Dick Dale or better called .. "The King of Surf Guitar."
CHAPTER 1
Richard Anthony Monsour, known as Dick Dale was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 4, 1937, considered the creator of surf music. Ascend of Lebanese, Polish and Belarusian ancestry.
From a very young age and passionate about finding a glimpse of what he had in mind. He decided to buy his first guitar and began to collect caps for soft drinks but he managed to obtain the amount to buy a Ukulele, beginning to develop his ideas. Later he manages to get the first guitar from him.
But he played it using only the top four strings, as if it were a ukulele. Dale being left-handed and all of his learning was done with the strings reversed in the standart sense, that is, the 6th string in the place corresponding to the prime. At that time he began to develop the technique of the double 'stacatto pickin' a repeated and very fast picking on the same string and began to use thicker strings.
In 1954 Dale's family moved to Orange County (California), his father, motivated by his faith in Dick in his wonderful talent, enrolled him in a country music talent show called 'Rocket to Stardom', winning the first place. From there he catapults to play various Los Angeles clubs and televised shows. By 1961 he called himself Dick Dale as a stage name and the Del-Tones his band. They debuted at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa where their first LP album, Surfer's Choice, was born, recorded mainly live and with an electric guitar, Dale would go from being a simple rhythm guitarist to a soloist with impressive tones and dazzling sounds, even burning the amplifiers. . His father, amazed at him, rented a large room to give concerts and dance parties, where Dale and his band had followed presentations and events to bursting with the public.
His own strong sounds, unique techniques and musical influences are said to be where the SURF ROCK genre was born. So much so that for 1962 the famous song came out on an LP .. MISIRLOU where the director Tarantino used it as the soundtrack for his film Pulp Fiction in the 90s, a theme that was revived with more fans to such musical effervescence. It should be noted that it was devised by Dale from an old Lebanese melody and based on the sounds of the mandolin that Dale played in his childhood that inspired him to create such a theme loaded with powerful Riffs and Reverb and delay to the maximum which made all the amplifiers burn From there they called him the "Beast". His performance and music was like extrapolate or transporting that sensation of being mounted on a surfboard.
He considered the father of the loudest guitarists in the world. One of them, also left-handed, came to see him in the early 1960s while he was in the military. From that moment on, Jimi Hendrix always held the King of Surf Guitar in high regard.
Dick earned the nickname 'King of the Surf Guitar' on his 1963 second LP album title.
