Police arrested a youth named Nuruzzaman Riyad (20) with 89 Indian mobile phones worth around Tk 13 lakh without BTRC approval in Sonagazi, Feni.
The sets were recovered early on Thursday (May 18) morning on the north side of Haji Samchul Haque Jame Masjid on Dak Bangla Kazirhat Road of Mangalkandi Union of Upazila.
The arrested is the son of Nurul Alam of Arqaim village of Bagdana union of Riyad upazila.
According to the police, Indian mobile sets were entering Sonagazi in a secret way after evading customs duty for a long time. On receiving the news, police raided the north side of Haji Samchul Haque Jame Masjid on Dak Bangla Kazirhat Road of Mangalkandi Union of Upazila. At that time, Riyad's bag was searched and 89 mobile sets not authorized by BTRC were seized.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Zahid Hasan filed a case naming Riyad as the plaintiff and accusing two unidentified persons as the accused for failing to show the proper documents of the mobile sets.
Sonagazi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khaled Hossain Dayan confirmed the truth of the incident and said that the arrested Riyad was sent to jail on the order of the court in the afternoon.
