Ceylon (Sri Lanka) gained independence from the British rule on the 4th of February 1948.The path of gaining independence was not an easy one.Many heroes lost their lives to gain independence.Today, I hope to tell about one such freedom fighter known as Veera Puran Appu.Hennedige Francisco was born to Kalisthro and Helena Fernando on the 7th of November, 1812 in Moratuwa.He was very brave even as a boy and could not bear how the village headman treated people.So, he attacked the village headman when he was thirteen and he was fled from Moratuwa.In early 1847, he married Bandara Menike and had one daughter.

He was worried about the trouble being caused to the citizen by the imperialists.Later he changed his western name to Puran Appu.Since then,he has been dedicated to the freedom of the nation.Puran Appu led a rebellion against the British in July 1848 with the help of Gongaale goda banda and Dingi raala.

Under the leadership of Puran Appu, ten thousand men armed with guns, spears and knives were set off to the Kandy for attack British.But there were no effective weapons for a battle.The plan of the Puran Appu and two others were, dispersed into three directions and then attack Kandy.Before reached to the destination Puran Appu's army attacked the British Fort-McDowell fort in Matale.However, there was no battle for the British army who had better weapons and more men.They destroyed the rebellion and Puran Appu was capured.Then Puran Appu is sentenced to be shot by fringin squad on 8th of August 1848 on the bank of Bogammabara Kandy.
I remind you of last words of Puran Appu.He held up his hand and said,"If there had been half a dozen such men as me to lead there would not have been a white man living in the Kandyan provinces" After his death he known as Veera Puran Appu / heroic Puran Appu. This has been the story of Veera puran appu the rebel of matale.This hero is special to me because his rebellion has been led in my home town Matale.There is a monument built in the Matale city to remember Veera Puran Appu.
