Hello dear,

To participate in the "Science and Technology" contest, today I am going to share a technical topic with you. And that is about "Genetic Engineering & Insulin Production".

The definition of Genetic Engineering?

Genetic Engineering refers to the direct manipulation on DNA to alter an organism characteristics in a particular way.

What is genetic engineering?

It sometimes called genetic modification.Genetic Engineering is the process of altering the DNA or an organism’s genome. Its may mean changing one base pair (A-T or C-G) or deleting a region of DNA or introducing and additional type of gene.
It also mean extracting DNA from another organism’s genome and combining it with the DNA of that individual organism.

Genetic Engineering is used by the scientists to enhance or modify the characteristics of an individual organism.Genetic engineering can be applied to any organism. It can be applied from a virus to a sheep. We can see a example that genetic engineering can be used to produce plants that have a higher nutritional value or can tolerate exposure to herbicides.

Genetic Engineering working system & Insulin Production :

If we want to explain the process of genetic engineering, we have taken the example of insulin. Insulin is a protein. It helps regulate the sugar levels in our blood.Basically insulin is produced in the pancreas. But in people with type 1 diabetes there is a problem with insulin production.People with diabetes there for have to inject insulin to control their blood sugar levels. And Genetic engineering has been used to produce a type of insulin,a very similar to our own, from yeast and bacteria. And this like E. coli(Bacteria).

This genetically modified insulin humalin was licence for human use in 1982. This genetic engineering process a small piece of circular DNA called a plasmid is extracted from the bacteria or yeast cell.

Then a small section is the and cut out of the circular plasmate by restriction enzymes molecular scissors. The gene for human insulin is inserted into the gap in the plasmid. This plasmid is now genetically modified. Then it is introduced into a new bacteria or yeast cell and divides rapidly and starts making insulin.

Creating the large amounts of the sales the genetically modified bacteria or East or grown in a large fermentation vessels that contain all the nutritions they need. More the sales divide the more insulin is produced.

And when fermentation is complete the mixture is filtered to release the insulin. And then the insulin is purified and packaged into bottles and insulin pens for distribution to patients with diabetes.

I invite @ab-rafi and @palang to participate in this contest.
