NASA has approved the preliminary design of the first space-based solar radio interferometer: SunRISE

The agency also approved the start of work on the creation of six cube-sat satellites for that interferometer.

All of them are expected to go into low-earth orbit between April 2024 and September 2025.

The goal of SunRISE (Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment) is to study the solar activity in the radio range.

Such a system will track the position and properties of type II and III radio burst sources accompanying solar flares and coronal mass ejections, their evolution in time, as well as the dynamics and structure of the Sun's magnetic field in its corona and interplanetary space.

The interferometer itself will operate at frequencies from 0.1 to 25 megahertz and will consist of six 6U cubesat satellites.

Each of the satellites will be equipped with an antenna consisting of 4 elements about 3 meters long.

They will receive energy from solar panels, and the distance between the devices will be maintained at the level of 10 kilometers.

As the interferometer needs to be away from the ionosphere and terrestrial radio noise, the system will be about 200 kilometers higher than the geostationary orbit.

Because of its altitude, after completion of the interferometer operation, the satellites will not be de-orbited. Their place will become their burial place.

The project was launched in 2017 as part of the Missions of Opportunity program, and in 2020 was approved by the agency.

Now, NASA announced that the planning and preliminary design phase of the interferometer has been successfully completed

The next steps are the final work on the design, manufacture and assembly of the vehicles and their tests.

All vehicles are expected to be ready by April 2024, with the launch window open until September 2025.
