SpaceX has launched the crewed Crew Dragon spacecraft into orbit with the first fully commercial crew of non-professional astronauts.
The flight will last three days, during which astronauts will be able to observe the Earth through a large dome in the bow of the ship.
Inspiration4 was ordered from SpaceX by businessman and CEO of Shift4 Payments, 39-year-old Jared Isaacman earlier this year, who brought three more people with him for free.
It will be the first fully private manned space flight to take non-professional astronauts into low-Earth orbit (with an apogee of 575 kilometers).
In addition, this will be SpaceX's first manned flight using the Crew Dragon Resilience spacecraft that has already flown to the ISS but for cargo missions.
For this mission, the company has replaced the docking port with a large glass dome so that astronauts can observe the Earth.
The crew of the spacecraft includes four people, besides Isaacman.
It includes 29-year-old doctor Hayley Arceneaux, who will become the first person with an endoprosthesis in the leg and the youngest American woman in space.
The third person is 42-year-old Chris Sembroski, who works as an engineer at Lockheed Martin.
And lastly, a 51-year-old geology professor Sian Proctor, who was one of the finalists for NASA's recruitment of astronauts in 2009.
Together with them went into orbit an ukulele, 30 kilograms of hops, which, upon returning to Earth, will be used to brew beer
The cargo includes also, 50 NFTs and a number of other items, which will then be sold at auction, and the proceeds will be used for research in the field of childhood cancer treatment.
The launch took place on September 15, 2021 at 20:02 local time from the LC-39A launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center.
The flight itself will last three days, during which the vital signs of the astronauts' body, as well as their sleep and cognitive abilities will be analyzed.
The splashdown of the Dragon ship in the Gulf of Mexico is scheduled for 19:00 local time on September 18.
