HISTORY OF THE VINDOLANDA

Vindolanda is a ruined Roman fort close to Hadrian's wall in northern England. It started off as a wooden fort in (85 A.D) and guarded the Roman road which stretched from the River Tyne in the East to the Solway Firth in the West. Following construction of Hindrian's wall, Vindolanda was built in stone.

The Fort was garrisoned by infantry or calvary auxilla. In the third century, the fort was garrisoned by the Cohors IV Gallorum equitata (fourth Cohort of Gauls.
An Inscription was discovered on the fort which reads

"CIVES GALLI DE GALLIAE CONCORDES QUE BRITANNI"

source : inscription on the vindolanda

Translation :

"The troop from the Gaul dedicates their statue to the goddess Gallia with the full support of british-born troops".

When the Roman withdrew from britain the fort was occupied by locals for several centuries, but eventually fell into a slow decline before complete abandonment, to the 9th century.

ARCHEOLOGICAL DISCOVERY OF THE VINDOLANDA

Evacuation of the site led by the Birley family have unearthen remarkable finds including;

Roman Boxing gloves where also found actually a pair....
The larger of the two gloves is cut from a single piece of leather and was folded into a pouch configuration. The extending leather of each side was slotted into one another forming a complete oval shape and causing a complete inner hole, into which a hand could still easily be inserted. The glove was packed with natural materials acting as shock absorber.

  • Wooden toy Sword

Another interesting finding at the Vindalanda is a wooden toy sword wh8ch children would have played with almost almost 2,000 years ago.

  • Mystery naked Horseman carved

IMG_20211108_231738.jpgsource
These were also the contents of the Vindolanda found a naked horseman carved from stone...a great archeological fossil, important to history and would never be forgotten.
Today, the walls of the fort are not much higher than a meter in most places but even just oober 300 years ago the military bathhouse in the fort was partly roofed. The Hadrian wall however, has been robbed ober the years and counting centuries.

Interesting story about the Roman fort. I have previously worked in a museum in my city and I can say that preserving such historical heritages is a very important task. History enriches its people and you can always learn something useful about the events of ancient times.
