Hi Guys, How are you doing? hope you had a great weekend? I did. I thank the organizers of this contest for another opportunity to engage the community in another life experience of mine.

I want to share with the community because naturally, I love to share life experiences with people I am comfortable with, so since I have come to like and accept the community, I think it appropriate to share with you guys such experiences. Secondly, I want to share because you never know who needs a piece of information for present or future purposes. Information, they say is power. Finally, the reason I want to share is that this is another medium I am using to thank God for his faithfulness and love towards my life.

When you say a day to remember, I have so many spectacular experiences which cut across the good, the bad, and the ugly that are worth remembering, but for this contest, I would like to share this particular incident with you guys.
I was a final year student of psychology at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria; I was writing my thesis for the attainment of my degree when I had an encounter with armed robbers. Before that time, I had experienced a similar encounter where I was robbed by angry-looking robbers, who made away with my two phones, my pc, and a bag containing some useful documents the previous year in school. I moved out of the hostel but that didn’t prevent the second occurrence I am about to share with you guys. The occurrence of these encounters is peculiar to the end of semesters. These robbers would rob students that are left behind at the period when a semester has ended and most students had gone home. Such a time was prone to robbery because of less security and alertness on campus.

The experience I am willing to share occurred by 2:00 am on a fateful day that was supposed to be like every other normal day. I can’t remember the day but the memory is yet alive. On that day, I was sleeping in my room when I was suddenly awakened to unusual noises. I stood up from the bed and asked my roommate who was studying Chinese at the time to off the light. I alerted my roommate to what was going on but he reluctantly went to lie on the bed and started to press his phone. The dude was not alert to what was going on. I walked to the balcony so I could be able to filter and draw a meaningful conclusion to the sounds I was hearing. I made it straight back to the room, but before I could get into the room, there was a sound of footsteps and metal quickly and furiously approaching my window. Before I could say “Jack Robinson”, my window was cracked open. The burglary proof was still standing but the glass frame had been tampered with. My funny roommate who was lying down on the bed, oblivious to the happenings around him now wanted to run into the passage demarcating the room and the toilet.
Don’t run. Come and open this door, one of the robbers furiously shouted. My roommate walked back into the room with his hand raised in the air. You could smell the pheromones of fear coming from this dude. I called his name and told him not to open the door but he was already too fearful to consent to any show of courage. I decided this affliction was not going to happen to me for the second time. My pc which contained my final year thesis and some other important documents was on a table about 5 feet from where I was standing; my roommate was about 3 feet close to the door, and the robber was looking at us from the window like a predator stalking its prey. I could not see the robber’s face because he was flashing a torchlight in a dark room, hence I didn’t know if he was holding a gun or not. I didn’t care at this point which made me throw caution to the wind. I made a move for my pc and jumped out of the balcony of the first floor of a three-story building. While I was some meters away from the room, I heard the robbers saying “Both of you lie down on the ground” It is obvious the hungry robbers didn’t know I had flown away like a bed. I jumped into some other hostels that night until I got to the hostel of anti-cult personnel, who is a friend of mine. I alerted him to what was happening, asking him to call his boys so we could attack but the young man was saying they didn’t have bullets in their guns. Can you imagine? So much for security.

There are other interesting facts concerning this incident but I would love to wrap it up here. The singular important lesson I learned from this story came to light when I visited those places I had jumped through that night. The first building I jumped into was still under construction; I noticed that the place I landed was very close to a deep hole and sharp iron that would have caused me great harm that night.

My advice to you guys is that if you ever encounter armed robbers, don't try to play smart with them if you know you don't have the effective expertise to either disarm or maneuver them. God may have had mercy on me but it is not wise to do what I did in that situation. what if that dude in my window had a gun and was ready to fire at the show of any opposing attitude. Most times these guys take drugs that could cause them to do engage in impulsive behaviors. I heard of a young man in the school who tried to fight one among some robbers that came to his house, and unfortunately, it cost him his knee. It is better to lose a phone than to lose a knee or to lose a pc than to lose an arm, and the worst is to lose life instead of something else. Fighting or trying to oppose armed robbers because of anything is not worth the risk. If you must, then you must be prepared mentally and physically to do so. There is a saying that says that when there is life there is hope. You can recover anything you lose as long as you are alive. I want to thank God for his infinite mercies and protection upon my life throughout my life's experiences
Thank you for reading and stay safe.
