How much happiness must be obtained until we really feel happy?
Questions that may be difficult to answer by most modern humans in big cities who are always vying for achievements. From amazing careers that schoolmates can be proud of, the perfect Instagram wife (or husband), and cute kids, to luxury cars that make everyone on the road turn their heads. We are used to making big things the basis of happiness, but forget that it can be found even in the smallest things.
This question popped into my head one night at a commuter train station. While waiting for the train, I tried to look around the bustling station. My eyes were stunned to see the figure of a small child with his mother. I don't know where they came from. To be sure, the child looks tired accompanying his mother – who also looks no less tired. Maybe as a gift to accompany, the mother bought a piece of brown bread. Not expensive bread with imported chocolate filling, but just a piece of 'abang-abang' bread topped with chocolate meses – which I estimate costs less than 5,000 rupiah.
It's that simple. However, from something as simple as cheap brown bread, the boy couldn't stop smiling and thanking his mother. He looked at the bread like a priceless gift. Seeing the child so happy, his mother smiled too – even though she still looked tired.
How the little things that we sometimes take for granted can turn out to be a source of happiness.
I immediately felt ashamed. Seeing children from an early age can make me happy from simple things, while I need things that are more valuable than that. Maybe that's what ended up stressing me – and probably many of us – in life. We try too hard to set high standards of happiness through great achievements. Which if we fail to achieve it will make us very disappointed, even to the point of cursing ourselves.
In fact, if we want to open our eyes, every day we have been given various happiness. Starting from still being able to wake up after a night's sleep, still being able to have breakfast, to still have a place to go home at night. When we are able to feel happiness in the smallest things, we will realize that life will be fine. Because basically, God never gives problems to every human being. What is needed is to be more sensitive and grateful for all the gifts we have received.
