Living by society's standards will make us sick because we will always have something negative to say about everything we do, good or bad. We must try not to seek approval from others, especially if we are not doing anything that will harm others. We can only achieve these things if we stop caring about what other people think of us.
Our environment is one of the factors that can influence, shape, or ruin our mental growth, depending on how it behaves. If we live in a toxic environment, it's not surprising that our behavior will be affected. We may absorb the toxicity, act on it, or experience a traumatic event that will destroy our self-esteem.
Ways to Stop Caring About What Other People Think of Us
There are methods that can help us not care about what other people think about us; we just need to know and apply them so that we can focus on self-growth rather than worrying about what other people think.
1. Use selective hearing.
In this world, criticism will always be present, no matter how hard you try; there will always be people who will try to bring you down. In this case, practice selective hearing by only listening to constructive criticism and not distracting criticism. Don't listen to people who constantly criticize you because some of them are envious; listening to them will only waste your time.
2. Improve your self-esteem.
People who seek validation from others usually have low self-esteem because they can't assess their actions and aren't confident enough in themselves and what they do.
Try to be honest with yourself about who you want to be and why. If you know what you want, you can work on your self-esteem. You are certain of what you want and no longer need to seek approval from others because you are confident that you are doing the right thing for yourself. Other people's ideas will not be able to penetrate your mind if you have healthy self-esteem.
3. Make your own decision and stick to your principles.
You must decide for yourself what values and principles you stand for, and what kind of life you want to live because society will do it for you.
Some people enjoy putting others in boxes in order to control them and prevent them from seeing what they are capable of. They enjoy manipulating people who are unsure of what they want to do with their lives.
4. Recovering from past traumatic experiences
You must find ways to heal from past traumatic experiences; looking back will continue to hurt you and limit your ability to spread your wings because you have many doubts, confusion, and fears, and you cannot trust anyone.
It is difficult to heal from a traumatic past, but it is the only way for you to move forward without looking back and avoid stumbling on your path. If you're having trouble overcoming your trauma, you can seek professional help from a psychologist or psychiatrist if your case is severe.
Last Words
Knowing ourselves, our values, and our worth will allow us to disregard what others think of us. Other people's thoughts are no longer our concern; if we continue to think about them, we will never be at peace, and it will only cause you to doubt ourselves.
You are you and not them; just be yourself and stop worrying about what other people think of you.
