Pidgin and Creoles

A pidgin is a simplified language derived from two (2) or more languages.
It is a contact language developed and used by people who don't share a common language in a given geographical area. It is used a limited way and the structure is very simple since they serve single simplicity purpose, they usually die out. This is always the situation when the regional pidgin speaker produce children whose first language (L1) supposed to be pidgin but which branch differs deeply from the original pidgin spoken by their parents. Once the pidgin has evolved and required native speaker, the children learn the pidgin is called Creole.

Reason for the development of Pidgin

• In the 19th century, when slaves from Africa were brought to North Africa to work on the plantation, they were separated from their people and mixed with people from other community, they were able to communicate with each other and the strategy behind this was to prevent them from escaping back to their land. Therefore, to finally communicate with the plantation and their bosses, they needed to form a language they could communicate, thus pidgin was the best objection.

• Pidgin arose as a result of colonization. Prominent language such as Germany, France, Spanish and English were the Language of the colonial masters. Since we added to adopt to their administration, pidgin was introduced to branch the bridge between them and and the slaves. In other words, pigdin and creole are hybridized codes which are invented by man to diverse a way of communication. They evolve in a particular linguistic situation, they are contact language especially they are product of contact language situation. A language situation is a situation where one language impeaches one another.

  Characteristics of Pidgin and Creole

• It is nobody language i.e it is not owned by a group of people.

• They have no native speaker.

• Pidgin is called a language of survival.

• Pidgin serves a limited factor in their simplest form, they provide a little more than the basic needs of communication.

Here on steemit, pidgin is not acceptable but we should have it at the back of our mind that pidgin in the Papua New Guinea, Tok Pisan is their national language. What is prohibited in one's person country is welcome in another country.
