MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD STORY
As a child, i always listen to stories both from friends and my beloved mother, but the one that touched and also affected me is that of my mother which she related to us about how she "survived drowning."
One day my mother sat us down and related a story of what happened to her when she was a child, precisely when she was in "elementary 1"as it was then called here in my country Nigeria.
my parents were farmers and they always woke us up as early as possible to accompany them to the farm by 4.30 A.M, to gather palm fruit from the farm which was far away from home,so that before 7.30 A.M we must have finished transferring the palm fruit to the house.
One faithful morning on a school day as usual, she continued: "when I returned back from the farm,I took my bath and wore my school uniform then picked up my books on my left hand, my pencil on my right hand, since I didn't have a school bag.
In my village, she added: there's this big stream we normally cross from my village to another village on our way to school, since we didn't have primary school in our home town and my parents do warn us: "Never to cross the stream alone and that we should always make sure we moved along with grown up people while crossing the stream to school".
When I got to the stream, instead of me to wait for grown up people that were to hold my hand and cross the stream, or I will follow them at their back and hold the fringe of their clothes, i felt I could cross with them so i decided to move alone though i saw them moving forward a bit far away from me. Unfortunately, in the process of walking on the plank that was placed as a walk over to cross the stream and catch-up with them, my leg slipped off because there was no hand rails attached to the walk over, I found myself inside the water with my pencil well fixed on my hand. While inside the water, I raised my pencil up so that I may be seen.
On looking back, those grown up that I was trying to catch-up with noticed that I was no longer following them. The next thing they saw was my pencil i raised up when I fell into the stream, so they rushed and jumped into the stream since they knew how to swim and brought me out, pressed my stomach and water came out from my nose and mouth, they later took me to my parents and my parents immediately rushed me to the near by community health center and the nurses on duty took proper care of me. When I became well, both the nurses and my parents strictly warned me not to cross that walk over alone again. From then on, my parents do assist me to cross the stream and when the school dismissed I will make sure I wait patiently for my town people and we all moved together back home till I finished the school."

Wow, that was such a close call, your mum could have died of not for the adults and her smartness of being able to raise the pencil up.
