Joined Family Vs Sperate Home

I appreciate this beautiful contest topic organized by @uzma4882.

A joint family is a type of extended family system that allows members to live in a single home. Let's say multiple generations of the same family living together. Locally here in Nigeria we call it "living in the family compound".
A big house with a grandmother, let's say she has three sons and a daughter. The daughter is still a spinster. The three sons are all married with children, some of her grand children are old enough to have their own rooms.

When I go home, I live in this type of setting. But when I get married I will not live in a family compound because it has a lot of challenges.
I will live on my own away from other family members with my wife and kids in a Sperate Home. I will only come home to visit.

The Joined Family

This setting creates room for family members to support each other and some things can be communally used. Each family cooks their own food but We all cook in the same kitchen and the food from your aunt's pot can easy get to you. And grandma eats from all her daughters-in-law and is well taken care of in her home.
Nobody needs a nanny because there is always someone around to help look after younger ones and the home. Kids training is a joint effort.
We all join hands to work on each other's farm during planting and harvesting. Family relationship keeps the whole system together as we care for each other.
We get to know our extended family and develop close bonds with them.
Kids grow up to see the value of other members of the family like uncle, aunty, cousins and grand parents as part of their lives. Kids from such backgrounds understand conflicts and how to manage it.

Disadvantage of The Joined Family
Misunderstanding and quarrelling is common place in the Joined Family system. Members in a joined family can not be overly private about their lives as others will always intruder. There may be issues of disagreement on how to take care of the kids, what is acceptable and what is not.
We ended up growing not with our parent's standard but with the standards of the whole joined family. Parents struggle to maintain authority over their kids

The Sperate Home

To get this setting, a person will have to move away from the family compound build or rent a place where he and his family will live.
This gives parents full authority over their kids and the children are only influenced by their parents. Children understand the sovereignty of a family unit with a father as the head and provider and mother as primary care giver.

Disadvantage of The Sperate Home
Kids do not get to know their relatives and don't have any attachment to them. That traditional bond between uncle, aunty, cousins and grand parents do not exist.
There is often a need to get a nanny to care for young kids at home.
Children from this type of homes are often independent and my only care for themselves. It destroy the traditional African bond that creates strong communities and unity.
The kids from such homes do not have a good understand of human relationship with conflict resolution skills.
Kids in this setting do not learn how to care for aged parents and grandparents.

Conclusion

I personally grow up in a joined family system but will love to train my kids in a Sperate Home. I will try to introduce all the advantage of a joined family by frequently contacting and taking my kids home to see and bond with relatives.
