What Are The Causes Of Lack Of Sleep Among Our Kids/Kid Lovers?
There are a lot of factors that contribute to this sleep debt, amongst them are:
- excessive use of computer in the night.
- viewing television for long hours before sleep.
- long use of cell phones before bed time.
- playing video games before sleeping.
These gadgets add spices to our lives and that of our kids, but they need to be used to the bearest minimum especially before bed time. All our kids are aware that smoking is very harmful to health, but do you also tell them that not getting enough sleep affect their mental, emotional and physical health as well as their growth?
For instance, lack of quality sleep can result in struggling to wake up the following morning. You can picture the scenerio, were your child went back to sleep after you woke him up several times and he is to prepare for school.
Or he is yawing so often in the day time and reports of being tired, thus he wants to sleep while other kids are busy with their school activities/having a nice time with family and friends.
It can as well lead to craving for some unhealthy foods like caffeine and others that can keep them awake.
What about loosing interest and inability to act on daily activities? Also lack of quality sleep leads to high state of forgetfulness, stress all the day, inability to learn new things, easily get angry and not be able to see clearly due to heaviness of the eyes. The list goes on and on.
From the above-mentioned side effects, do you see why we need enough sleep each night? But are there benefits of getting enough sleep in the night, let's find out.
Note that, we should allow time for relaxation before sleeping as this period of relaxation enhances our sleep during the night.
If we (parents) and kids get adequate sleep, we are bound to be very active, develop new skills, relate well with friends and family, come up with better ideas and ways of handling difficult tasks during the day time and so many other benefits.
However, we should not allow our children to have several nights of sleep debts as it will increase the side effects of lack of sleep and this lost sleep will never be replaced with another night sleep.
How long can each child sleep, that can be regarded as quality sleep?
According to The Canadian Paediatric Society, the recommended amount of sleep according to age are stated below:
" 0 to 2 months - 16 to 18 hours
2 to 6 months - 14 to 16 hours
6 months to 1 year - 14 hours
1 to 3 years - 10 to 13 hours
3 to 5 years - 10 to 12 hours
5 to 10 years - 10 to 12 hours
6 to 13 years - 9 to 11 hours
14 to 18 years - 8 to 10 hours."
The above is just a recommendation as kids have different needs each night. Some may at times need more sleep than the recommended does.
You can discuss with your child the need to have enough sleep in order for him to gain the maximum healing and restoration of the body. And as parents, you also need to find out how long your child can sleep, that will make him feel better and fine, so that he can get quality sleep each night
Although some kids may wake up in the night due to bedwetting, nightmare, sleepwalk or want to use the rest room, determine how many times these happens and know if you may consult your doctor.
Conclusion
We can see as kids lovers the need to get quality sleep each night. Help your child to see the need to make good use of this restoration process and be balanced physically, mentally and emotionally during the day time.
Also parents can as well get enough sleep during the night by avoiding excessive use of gadgets like cellphone, television, etc so that we can be ready and prepare to perform well the following day as lost sleep can never be recovered or replaced with another night sleep.
