peptic ulcer is the condition in which there is sore or wound that develop in the mucosal lining of the stomach.

CAUSES

• Helicobacter pylori
• prolong use of non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs e.g aspirin and ibuprofen

RISK FACTORS

• Smoking
• Alcohol
• Stress
• Eating of spicy foods

But these factors can not cause ulcers, but they can worsen the ulcers and prolong healing

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS

• Severe pain in the middle upper stomach
• Heartburn
• Belching
• Feeling of stomach fullness
• Nausea and vomiting
• Weight loss
• Dark black stool
• Bloating
• Feeling faint
• Appetite change

TREATMENT

• Take milk first thing in the morning
• Eat at least a little in the morning before going out
• Take prescribe drugs like antacid e.g stopacid
• Keep to your appointment with the doctor
• Take drugs that will reduce or block the production of acid e.g Omeprazole
• Take antibiotics to kill the bacteria e.g amoxicillin
• Take drugs that protect the lining of the stomach e.g mesoprostol
• Take pain relief as prescribed

PREVENTION

• Avoid stress as much as possible
• Protect yourself from being infected by not eating infected food and drink infected wate
• Take pain relief as prescribe by the doctor and with food
• Avoid drinking alcohol when taking medication becauses it will increase the risk of stomach upset.
• Avoid spicy food
• Make sure you eat at least, avoid hunger

COMPLICATIONS

• Internal bleeding
• Anemia
• Perforation of the stomach wall
• Obstruction
• Lost of weight
• Gastric cancer
