The story

The bus arrived at the station an hour early. Evelyn stepped off the bus into the hot sun and waited for her suitcase which was at the bottom of the mountain of bags and suitcases. Then, she looked carefully at the map her auntie had drawn for her. Picking up her suitcase, she turned left, crossed the street, and went round the corner, opposite the bank. Evelyn stopped to look at the map again. Her auntie had said her house was a ten-minute walk away. She must go down the main street and look for a petrol station on the right. There would be a garage next to it with a small road in-between. She would have to go down this road and her auntie's road would be the second turning on the left. The house would be the third one, opposite a huge tree.

Auntie Bola had been as busy as a bee all day, preparing the house for Evelyn's visit. She had already cooked a tasty stew and she had cut up plantains ready to fry. Suddenly, she remembered the biscuits she had promised to buy Evelyn. Auntie Bola called out to her daughter, 'Awell, I must buy those biscuits your cousin likes." 'I'll come with you,' Aweli said and rushed out of the house with her mother.

A few minutes later, Evelyn arrived at the house and called, 'Hi, everyone. It's me, But there was silence. She put down her suitcase which knocked against the door and to her surprise it opened. Evelyn went inside and immediately went to the kitchen to get a drink of water. The delicious smell of stew made her feel as hungry as a caterpillar. She took a spoon and dipped it into the stew. 'Mmm, Auntie Bola is such a good cook,' she thought and she picked up a bowl and took some stew. With the bowl and a spoon she sat down on the nearest chair.

'Ugh,' she said to herself, 'this chair is like a brick!' She took a cushion and put it on the chair before she sat down. "Ah, now the chair is as soft as a ripe mango!'

she thought and she laughed. She wondered where Auntie Bola had gone. I hope she comes back soon because I'm as sleepy as a lazy lizard after that long journey." Evelyn put her empty bowl on the table, got up, and went into the bedroom. She saw a bed behind the door and put her suitcase on it. Then she sat down on the bed opposite, leant backwards and stretched out on the bed. Soon she fell asleep and was as still as a branch. Not long afterwards, Auntie Bola and Awell returned from their shopping. The first thing they noticed was that the door was open. 'Oh! We've had a thief in the house!' Auntie Bola said, shaking like a leaf.

Aweli saw the bowl on the table. 'Look, Mum, he's eaten some of your stew! Aweli went into the bedroom and saw the suitcase on the bed. 'Hey! Someone has left a suitcase on my bed!' she yelled. 'Perhaps he's filled it with our things.' Her voice woke Evelyn who sprang up. Awell heard a noise behind her. She turned round and saw the shape of someone and screamed, 'Help!' Auntie Bola grabbed the big spoon from the stew and ran into the bedroom. She was about to hit the stranger on the head when she heard a familiar voice. 'Auntie Bola, it's me, Evelyn!'
