Introduction
I welcome you all to my blog. In this writeup, I will be explaining the meaning of magnets, types, properties and uses of magnets. If you carefully read through this writeup you will benefit from it.
Meaning
Magnets are magnetic substances that attracts metallic substance like iron or steel materials towards themselves. When hung freely, they will always point in the North-South Direction.
Kinds of magnets 🧲
- Lode stone is a natural magnet
- Magnet made by Man are called artificial magnet.
- Some magnets are temporary as they lose their property easily.
- Some magnets retain their property for a long time this are permanent magnet they take time to be magnetised.
Types of magnets
Artificial magnet can be of various shapes. They include
- Bar magnets,
- Horse shoe magnets,
- Cylindrical magnets and
*Circular or ring magnets.
Now let have a look at the types of magnets in the pictures below.
Bar magnet

Horseshoe magnets

Cylindrical magnets
Source This is an example of a Cylindrical magnets. It looks like a cylinder.
Circular or ring magnets
Source This is a typical example of circular or ring magnets
Properties of magnets
- A magnet will exert a force around it with which it pulls or attract metallic substance towards itself.
- When suspended freely by a string, it will point to the North-South direction.
- All magnets have two poles. The end pointing towards the north is the south Pole and the end pointing towards the South is the North Pole.
- Magnet has force which attract materials to themselves. This force is called magnetic force.
Making a magnet
A magnet can be made by several methods.
Stroking method
a)Take a bar magnet and an iron nail.
b) Stroke the entire length of the nail with the bar magnet in One direction only. Repeat this for 30 to 40 times.
c) The nail becomes a magnet and is able to attract iron filing.Using Electric current
a) Take an iron nail about 7cm - 10 cm long.
b) Take a length of electric wire and coil the wire around the nail from beginning to the end, living the tips free.
c) Attract the ends of the Wire to a touch cell with a tape that connect the wire to a battery.
d) Leave it aside for sometime.
e) On testing the nail, you will find out the nail is attracting iron filing. Hence a magnetic field has been made by the electrical method.
Uses of magnet
- Magnets are used in compasses
- In cranes, eletromagnets are used to lift heavy loads of iron and steel.
- Strong magnets are used by doctors to remove pieces of iron and splinters from the eye.
- Some doors have magnets that keep them shut.
- Magnets are also used in electric Bell, generators, loudspeakers, television sets, telephones and computers.
Taking care of magnets
- Magnets are stored in pair, with the North and South Poles stuck to each other.
- They are stored with iron or steel pieces on which the magnet are placed. These pieces are called keeper.
- Heating or hammering destroy magnets. Therefore, care must be taken so that the magnets are not kept near a heat source. They must not be dropped from a height.
Conclusion
Thank you dear ones for reading my post and I wish to hear from you at the comment section of this post.
From the post, you can see that without having a magnet at home you too can make your own magnets and make use of it when needed.
