What is a family

A family is a group of people who are closely related by blood. A family usually originates from coming together of man and woman through marriage. Marriage is the legal union of man and woman to become husband and wife.
(i) Nuclear family, and
(ii) Extended family.
A nuclear family is a simple family made up of parents and their children. In this type of family, its members includes the following husband, wife or wives, and their children.

There are two kinds of nuclear family
i. Monogamous (nuclear) family.
ii. Polygamous (nuclear) family.

Monogamous nuclear family consists of husband, wife and children.
Polygamous (Nuclear) family: This consists of husband, wives and children.

ii. Extended Family
Extended family includes all the people that are related by blood through the father or mother. An extended family is made up of many nuclear families.

Name the types of marriage practice in your country.

There are three types of marriage practice in my country Nigeria. These are:
(i) Monogamy
(ii) Polygamy, and
(iii) Polyandry.

Describe the major differences between the types of marriages mentioned above.

Monogamy: When a man lives with only one wife legally, such a marriage is known as monogamy. In Nigeria, this is common with Christians.

Polygamy: In some cases, a man gets married to more than one wife. This type of marriage where a man marries many wives is known as polygamy. Islam supports polygamy.

Polyandry: Polyandry is not common in Nigeria. Globally, it is very rare. It is a situation where a woman has more than one husbands at the same time. The two major types of family are:

Explain five benefits of living together in the family.

Living together in the family demands
humility, maturity, understanding, sense of
belonging and co-operation for peace, unity and progress to be achieved by members of such a family. Apart from the traditional roles of our parents, which, in modern times, could be performed by both or either of the parents, to keep the family going, the children in our have roles they play.

Fathers
The role of the father as the head of the family includes among others:

  • Caring for the whole family.
  • Provision of shelter, money for food, clothes and education.
  • Giving moral guidance and protection to the family etc.

Mothers
Mothers should assist fathers to provide the needs of the family. They should
(i) cook the food,
(ii) buy clothes for their children with the money provided by their husbands,
(iii) ensure that the house is kept clean always etc.

Children
Children should respect and obey their parents and seniors. They should run errands like fetching of water, buying certain things from their neighbourhood, sweeping the house and compound, assisting mothers during cooking, and, at the same time, learn how to cook. Boys in the family are trained to take the position of a father while girls are trained to master the role of a mother in the family, as this will help them take over these roles when they grow up, to ensure their survival and existence in the society.

*The benefits of living together in the

family*
The benefits of living together in the family include:
(i) Happiness.
(ii) Education of children.
(iii) Provision of food, clothes and
shelter for children.
(iv) Protection.
(v) Unity.
(vi) Good social behaviour, and
(vii) Maintaining good family name and reputation.

Every family wants to be identified with its norms of behaviour and expectations. An individual's family is known by the way the individuals behave in the society. Any individual who does not behave according to family norms is termed a deviant. Children learn the do's and don'ts of the society as taught to them by older members of their family. There is happiness when or members live together as a family.

There is oneness, peace and progress both socially, economically an academically. Children feel secured in the hands of their parents and relations
because of a deep sense of belonging that exists among members. Deviation from family norms becomes difficult. The family teaches us skills needed to be happy and useful to ourselves and the
community or society we live in. Some of such skills include how to feed oneself, dress up properly, look after domestic animals, help in the running of our homes, respect for other people and the authority
of parents and elders in the society.

Is a house help a member of a family? Explain.

A house-help in the family is a member of that family. He or she should not be discriminated against: whatever that is done for other children in the family should be done at the same time for him or her The discriminating words should be avoided. Avoid abusing house-helps. House chores should be shared equally among all the children. Stigmatization of maids should be avoided, for a sense of belonging and progress to be achieved among members in a family.
