Introduction
I want to say a very big thank you to @ngoenyi for another interesting contest to share my favourite childhood story and lessons learnt from it.
The title of my story is "The wicked step mother and her step son."
The wicked step mother and her step son
Once upon a time there lived a simple family of a father, his two wives and two sons.
The family was a happy one until the eldest of the wives died and left her son in the care of the younger wife. As time went on she started to maltreat the son of the first wife. He did all the housework while her son will be playing around doing nothing.
The older son got tired and reported to his father about how his step mother is maltreating him, but it did not make any difference as she maltreated him the more when you father was not at home.
It got to a point where she will starve him and give food to only her son and when ever she goes to the market to buy things, she buys for only her son. She always bought the African star apple popularly known as "agbalumo or udara" but will not buy for the step son. So he picked the seeds of the fruit and went to the bush and planted it.
He went to the bush he planted the fruit and began to sing to the tender plant and to his surprise the tree grew in size until it started producing fruits and he ate till his satisfaction. He continue to go there to eat everyday until his step mother got suspicious of him and asked her son to follow him to where ever he went. He son the followed him one faithful evening and saw that he was always going to eat the fruit he had planted. The son became jealous of his step brother and went home waiting for the next day so he will go to the bush and plug the fruits without his brothers permission. His brother came and meet him on the tree and told him to come down that the fruit he had eaten is enough but his greed will not let him as he wanted more. It made his brother angry and he sang to the tree so that it will grow very tall, and the tree became very tall that it got his younger brother scared and he began to plead, so where the passerby pleading that he should reduce the height of the tree. When the elder brother finally sang for the tree to reduce his younger brother came down and asked for forgiveness for the way he has been treated since his mother's death. He forgave his step mother and brother, and they lived as a happy family once again.
What are the lessons learnt from the story?
The lessons I have learnt from the story are :
- The unity of the family is very essential as it brings happiness to everyone.
- Wickedness does not pay as in the case of the step mother who maltreated her step son.
- Jealousy is not a good character as it will only lead to a dead end.
- Greed is as well not good, we should be careful not to fall victims of greed.
- Respect others, be they your relative or not, because respect is reciprocal.
How did you learn the story or who told you the story?
The story was told to me by my aunty when I was living with her. She also repeated the story to me and my cousins when we were all together.
At what age did you learn the story?
I learnt the story when I was 9 years old.
Conclusion
It was a nice time going back the memory lane of my childhood to discover I still have this story intact in my brain to tell the younger generation.

Wow, I can see that it is good to be nice to a person, and kudos to the boy for forgiving them, I can see that to err is human and to forgive is divine, anyways that does not justify the actions of his step mom.
