Freehand sketching: a Parrot
Drawing a Parrot
-------------------------------------- |
---|
Parrots are known for their ability to mimic sounds and short phrases. Due to their intelligence, charismatic, and colorful nature, parrots have been popular pets and companions throughout history.
Description and types of parrots |
---|
Parrots talk, screech and squawk among the many other little sounds they make. They are birds also known as psittacines
They have brightly colored plumage, some have a single colour while others may have a combination of two or more colours like the Scarlet Macaw which is Red, yellow, blue, and green and the Blue and Gold Macaw which comes in Blue, gold, and green.
It's easy to identify a Parrot by its bill and foot. They have a strong, curved bill with clawed zygodactyl feet, (four toes arranged such that two faces forward two face backward).
You are likely going to know a parrot is around when it repeats what you said.
Feeding habits |
---|
All the parrots I have seen are pets in a cage, feed with bird feed. A parrot that is free in the wild will is omnivores, which means their diet consists of both plants and meat. Their food contains flowers, nuts, fruits, buds and insects, with seeds as their favorite.
That is why they have those strong curved beaks specifically for breaking open the seed's shell.
a few species of parrots are nocturnal, most of then feed during the day.
If you have a parrot for a pet, you can feed the parrot with the following fruits, nuts and veggies
Fruits | Vegetables | Nuts |
---|---|---|
Apples | Asparagus | Almonds |
Bananas | Broccoli | Cashews |
Grapes | Carrots | walnuts |
Mango | Collard greens | Peanuts |
Papaya | Leeks | Hazelnuts |
Passion fruit | Sweet potatoes | Macadamias |
Pomegranate | Pumpkins | Brazil nuts |
Peaches | Okra | Pistachios |
There are things you should not feed your parrot with.
√ Eggplant
√ Garlic
√ Raw rhubarb
√ Tomatoes.
√ Mushrooms
√ Avocado
√ Onion
√ Raw beans
√ Whole celery sticks
It is feared that some of these might be toxic to the parrot, While some are confirmed to be highly toxic.
Uses and Importance to man |
---|
Parrots are often kept as pets and as companions because of their intelligence and teachable nature. They also develop unique personalities and can form a strong bond with it's owner.
- Sold for cash: Some people trap and sell parrots for an income, to make more money, some may have to train the parrot making it more valuable.
- As a Pet: They keep us company as a pet, giving kids something to care for.
- Helper animals: Parrots can be trained to detect anger in their owner and do or say things to pacify them.
- Watchbirds: Being intelligent and loud makes parrots good watchbirds alerting it's owner on intruders
Interesting Behavior and Habitat |
---|
Most Parrots get attached to one mate for life, though they may live in a group called pandemonium. Yes I mean the pandemonium you know. Most especially younger parrots are very noisy, chaotic and manic. You will be equally right if you described it as a flock or company of parrots.
A pandemonium can be a collection of 20 to 30 individual birds, each attached to a specific Bird. A great lesson in fidelity.
In most species of parrots, both parents look after the offspring. And the most preferred place to live are warm areas around the Southern Hemisphere, places like northern Mexico. Australia, South and Central America.
Could they be dangerous to man? |
---|
They are not dangerous but be careful, they can deliver a very strong bite force in defense. Larger parrots like the macaw with a bite force of 600-700 PSI, you can loose a finger.
A stray parrot may have giardia or psittacosis, which are highly zoonotic. Other problems includes being Loud, messy and destructive.
If after enumerating it's possible downside you still feel like having a parrot for a pet, then train it well and give it the best health care available. I will personally love to have a well trained parrot that is useful as a companion and pet for my kids.
Myth about parrots |
---|
It is said that only male parrots can talk.
If you should teach your parrot how to whistle, it will not learn how to talk.
A Parrots is the only bird that can talk, and all parrots can talk.
A parrot can take your ability to talk if it copy you.
Drawing the My Parrot |
---|
Needed items for the drawing
To draw the parrot, I made use of the following items:
• An A4 plain sheet
• A pencil
• A sharpener
• An Eraser
The plain A4 paper will serve as my canvas.
Step 1
I started with a sketch of the parrots head and a little down it's neck and shoulders.
Step 2
At this point, what I an drawing looks more obvious with it's head, curved bill, body and tail.
Step 3
At this point I was trying to add the feets and it was not coming as expected.
Step 4
Adjusting the feet and placing the parrot on a stand with a bit of shading.
Step 5
The parrot at this point is completed and i will be taking a selfie with the parrot i draw.
This parrot drawing contest was organized by @eliany of the Steem Kids & Parents community and I will love to invite, @udyliciouz, @bela90 and @oasiskp to participate in this drawing contest.
