INTRODUCTION
When we hear the word “I’ve a gift for you”, from your loved ones, spouse or friends, there’s this feeling of excitement and joy feels our heart, except the person gave you an “exercise book” packaged in a gift box 😜😜 then you can call that person out on social media and give the person a warning of their life…. ( just kidding). Like the saying goes “men are in different sizes”. What a rich man might give you, is different from what an average or poor guy might give you as gifts but what matters most is the intentions behind the gift. But as kids, We don’t care if you’re rich or poor, we get excited all the time when we see gifts coming. All gifts are sacred to us that is why when we see our neighbors children playing with our gifts or rough handling it, we rush and grab it from them.
What was the most memorable gift of my childhood and Who gave you this gift
Well, as a kid, I celebrated only my one year birthday that my parents shared the picture with me and I saw gifts littered all over. Since then till now, I’ve not celebrated any other birthday but I’ve received some gifts either in cash, prizes won in school or present from my loved ones but among all, one gift that stood out for me was the ”SEGA MEGA DRIVE VIDEO GAME” my dad bought for me in my SSS 2 third term. My dad has always believe that nobody is a dullard especially with his children. He believes with the right motivation, and the necessary resources every sane person will do well. He use to tell us a story to back this up, which if I’m chanced, I’ll share it one day. My dad knows how much I loved playing video games and how I’ll starve myself just to save my lunch money to pay up in a Game Center. Sometimes, he’ll even flog me for coming home late. Because of the plenty time I spend on game, it was affecting my academics. My dad now said, if I can come out between first and third position in class, he will get me a game.
That was how I started paying more attention to my books but once in awhile I do sneak out to play the game. Right from SSS 1, science subjects were the only ones bringing my grade down, so I paid more attention to it. But no matter how much I tried and effort I put especially chemistry and there plenty chemical equations, I still couldn’t breakthrough of coming out among the first 3 position. It was now SSS 2 second term, when I was given the privilege to pick between science and art subjects. I went for my art subjects since I was pretty good there and I intensified my reading. I knew that term won’t pass me by, I must get that game. Through out that second term, I refused to visit any Game Center. Exams came, I did very well, in fact with my performance, I thought I will carry first position and I ended up carrying 5th. I was so angry that I cried after seeing my position. I was wondering the “gods” I’ve offended that won’t let me get this game. But my parents motivated me that they were impressed of my performance but they had know idea that it was the video game that was my motivation. In fact, my dad has even forgotten he promised me video game because it was something he said since “SSS 1” about a year ago.
Third term had resumed, I returned to school and my teachers were happy with me for my new position. It made me so happy that teachers are now recognizing this boy that use to drag last position before. But I didn’t allow that make me loose focus on my video game. I worked more harder and even begged my parents to get a maths lesson teacher for me because that’s where I was having issues. Exams had come and I did exceedingly well. I came out second position and got some gifts as best in art subjects. Nobody saw it coming at all. I was very happy but all those books and gifts were not what I was waiting for, it was my dad’s gift.
I waited till my dad returned and I showed him my results. He was very happy with me and he also took me out that night for little celebration. I asked my dad for the game he promised me… my dad was like “which game did he promise me?” You need to see me crying!! I was so angry. He tried to calm me down and told me he can’t remember when he promised me game. He had to ask my mum to be sure if he made such promises. My mum confirmed it. My dad was now trying to avoid buying me the game and went through my results for the second time and noticed no science subject, he started using that as an excuse, that when he made such promise, their was science subject but now he can’t see those subjects again.😂😂😂 what a crazy excuse!!!
I was so angry that I didn’t talk to my dad for some days. But, we all know how our Nigerian parents they don’t care at all, if you try to blackmail them emotionally. Well, one good day when I had given up on the dreams of getting a game, I woke up one Saturday to see my video game beside me. It was like a dream come true when I saw it. It was one of my happiest moments during my childhood. If I was a white kid, I would have showed my appreciation by kissing my parents but the Nigeria in me won’t agree…😂😂 Hug is enough!! I can remember me and my kid bro playing that game from morning till the next day. My dad started threatening to cease the game, if he sees us play the game too much again.
Would you feel happy on this surprise gift?.
I don’t think there’s anyone that won’t feel happy whenever they give them gifts. In fact, as we speak, I’m always open to gift. You know as adults, especially for guys, receiving gifts from loved ones are on rare occasions, instead we’re the one who give the gifts. Imagine, surprising me with a gift, I’ll jump and touch the sky when I receive one.
Even the Bible made us to understand that
everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts (proverb 19:6)
So, I don’t think there’s any one who doesn’t appreciate gifts. The more gifts you give out the more friends you get!!!
In conclusion,
Whether as a child or an adult, there’s this joy that’s universal whenever you receive a gift because it holds a special place in our heart not just for their material value but for the intentions and emotions they represent.
It's interesting to know your dad did surprise you with a gift Based on what you like most. I hated videos games. Any gift that couldn't satisfy my stomach's needs wasn't classified as gift for me. I just love the way you introduced this post. There's no greater joy than receiving gifts, not just gifts, expensive gifts. Don't worry, I'll surprise you one of these days so I'll watch and see how you'll touch the sky. Thanks for the invite. Wishing you best of luck in this contest
