Hi, friend!
Welcome once again to this community of kids and parents. We have a simple fun activity organised by @m-fdo. Our task is to help kids create something useful out of nothing. The Steemkids community supports creativity so I came up with an idea – to create a Chimp Chain.
It took a while to brainstorm the idea for this beautiful piece. But I had to settle for this after watching the Baby's Day Out movie with my 4-year-old friend who had a hard time differentiating between monkeys and apes.
She kept arguing that it was a monkey who cared for Baby BooBoo.
I had to explain that monkeys and apes are two different types of primates.
The Differences
Monkeys
- Monkeys have tails or small studs.
- Monkeys have smaller chests. They have facial (face) hair as well.
- There are over 200 species of monkeys. For instance, baboons (an old-world monkey) and spider monkeys (a new-world monkey).
- They walk more with 4 legs.
- Their lifespan is shorter.
Apes
- Apes like chimpanzees and gorillas have no tails.
- Apes have broader chests and less hairs on their faces.
- Apes have two major groups: Lesser Apes e.g. Gibbon and Larger Apes like gorillas, chimpanzees, orang-utan, etc.
- They walk more with two in an upright position.
- They live longer.
I made her understand that chimps, for instance, live in small social groups called communities. And each community is led by the Alpha.
They give their young exclusive care and nurture them until they can fend for themselves after 5 years.
They live in groups known as tribes or troops.
Time to get right into the Chimp Chain process!
You will need:
- a long piece of paper
- a pencil
- scissors
Step 1 |
---|
Accordion-pleat a long piece of paper into folds. Make it an inch across. |
Step 2 |
---|
With a pencil, lightly sketch half of a chimpanzee, being sure the center is on a fold and the hands extend to the end of the paper. That way the chimps will be holding hands. |
Step 3 |
---|
Cut out the chimps while the paper is still folded. Now play with it or add it to your toy collections. |
My young friend was thrilled to have her own Chimp Chain and started acting in an invisible theatre.
She even piggybacked it.
Oho! I never knew humans could piggyback chimpanzees!😲

It was fun. She asked for it the next day and I had to create 2 for her this time so if one misses again, she can play with the next.
