Hello friends it is a pleasure to post in this steemkids community once again, and today i would love to talk about culture which from social studies. So lets start learning.
Culture
Culture is the way a particular group of people live. It includes the totality of people's belief, their modes of worship, their works of art and craft or language etc.
Types of culture
The two types of culture are;
Material culture
Non-material culture
Material cuūlture: This refers to those various aspects of culture that we can see ,feel and touch around us. It includes those things which the society makes in order to meet the need of its people. Those items lnclude; Furniture, Craft, Food, All concrete or tangible items made and used by man.
Non-material culture: This refers to those cultural materials that are not visible such as religion, language, aptitudes (inherent ability), ideas, knowledge, music etc. We can't see or touch those aspects of culture but we can hear and understand them.
Characteristics of culture
- Culture is dynamic: This means that culture changes
- Culture is learned: Culture is not gotten by inheritence rather people learn culture.
- Culture is created: Culture is made by people (Individuals)
- Culture is adaptive: culture can be adjusted to fit a particular situation or condition.
- Culture is universal: Culture is practiced all over the world, there is no place in the world that do not practice culture.
- Culture is heterogenous: This means that culture is neithier indigenous nor foreign, rather it is a combination of both .
Some cultural similarities in Nigerian
Nigeria is a country that is made up of more than 360 ethnic groups. These ethnic groups have their own language and custom. Some of the cultural similarities ate;
Marriage: In different cultures in Nigeria, there are marriagr ceremonies and it is the groom that pays the bride price.
Respect for elders and rules: All ethnic groups in Nigeria respect their elders and rulers.
Farming: Farming as an occupation, is common to all cultural groups in Nigeria.
Works of art: In Nigeria all the cultural groups have theri own art and crafts. They all have peculiat styles.
Religious by nature: Nigerians believe in the existence of God. All the three religions believe in the supreme being.
Celebration of festivals: All the cultural groups in Nigeria celebrate similar festivals e.g New yam festival in Igbo land marks the beginning of harvesting, Argungu fishing festival of the Hausa marks the beginning of fishing activities etc.
Some cultural differences in Nigeria
Religion: Three main religions are mainly practiced in Nigeria. Christianity is mainly practiced in the south, Islam is widely practiced in the Nothern part of Nigeria while traditional religion is common to both southern and nothern Nigeria.
Dressing pattern: Each ethnic group has its unique dressing. For example, the three major ethnic groups, Hausa men wear babariga while their women wear clothes that cover all parts of their bodies. The yoruba men wear agbada (wide flowing gown) and their women wear wrapper and buba, while lgbo men wear lang flowing shirt and wrapper underneath.
