SEC17 WK:#4: the effects of economic hardships on families

in hive-139765 •  9 months ago

Hello steemians I trust you are very well and okay, it is a new week and another series of engagements challenge are lined up for us. I am happy to participate in this challenge as I share with you my thoughts, opinion and knowledge on the subject matter.

What is economic hardship? This can be defined as a situation where an individual is unable to pay for or afford basic living expenses.

Basic living expenses include and is not limited to water, food, electricity, education, healthcare, etc.

State of the Nation and the economy of Nigeria

The state of my country is important to understand why Nigerians are facing economic hardships.

According to Transparency we are ranked 145/180 in the corruption index and according to news outlet Cable.ng “The World Bank says poverty rate in Nigeria has increased to 46 percent in 2023, representing 104 million poor Nigerians”.

So my dear readers you can see with the above that more than half of my country are living in poverty. This is the reason why we have a higher corruption index as people now go the extent to commit hideous acts just to get money to put food on their table.

The effect on my family

I and my brothers

Just like the time of the civil war in Nigeria there was so much hardship that families had to starve to death, some parents killed and ate their own children. Although we are not facing any war now but poverty and hardship is making more families to suffer.
In my family it has not been rosy at all, we are not rich and we are not very poor. We are just below average which means we make enough to eat and have nothing to save for tomorrow. The money we should have saved is taken over by bills which must be paid.

It has not been easy for my single mom to raise all three boys. We are also all in the university and the cost of education recently went up.
The only thing that helps me most of the times is the fact that I came on steemit. It is for this reason also I'll forever be grateful to my inviter @vudeme123 for introducing this platform to me as it has helped weather the storms of economic hardship. This was especially during my newcomer days where I was sure of getting something weekly.

How we are coping

For my I cope by writing on steemit and helping students do some school work. There is no part-time work here where I stay or the pay is very bad.
My mom had to take a loan and be paying back by installment since she's a civil servant.

Group cooking and eating

Other ways we cope is by:

  • buying foodstuffs in bulk to reduce waste, my mom father's buys a bag of rice than to be buying in cups.
  • buying things when it's less expensive or when it is sold at a discount.
  • living life within our means, we are aware of our financial situation and everyone is cutting their cloak according to their size.

In summary, with all that is going on, my family is hopeful that things will stabilize as we pray for God to intercede in the affairs of our nation. But while we wait for such prayers to be answered we are doing our part to stay alive and witness it.

Thank you for reading my piece, I kindly invite @stef1, @goodybest and @adachukwu to participate in this engagement challenge.

Thank you boss, I see you learnt alot from my post. I appreciate your comments

Just like I wrote in my own entry, it is not easy to survive in this country Nigeria. I know what my parents are passijg through and this Tinubu government is not helping matters. Just look at today, they have banned another crypto platform from p2p trading. Does it get better?

My dear you are right o, to survive in this country now, you have to be an average citizen with a minimum net worth of 2,000,000 and a paying job of about 200k monthly, because naira is graduating losing its value and this is very worrisome. Banning cryptocurrency is not even a solution to this problem but let see where this is heading, am giving them 6 months, if everything won't get back to normal or worse

Alright dear, let's just hope for the best in this our father's land! Thanks for commenting.

Greetings @zekanem ! Dear I have read your post about economical Hardships of your country.Your country and your residential peoples are facing very difficulties right now.keep courage and carry on your hard working for the best .My best wishes for you and your country.

Thank you for the motivation

Oh man! Things are truly bad in Nigeria!
When I read those stats and read more on the internet, I could not believe my eyes. 104 million is almost double the number of people living in South Africa.

Yesterday, I had two guys here helping me fix a chair that one of the guests broke. The one is from Zimbabwe, and the other is from Malawi. Here, they are trying to make a living in South Africa, as they could not make it in their own countries. It breaks my heart that they had to leave their family, their wives, and their kids behind.

I wish you and your family all the best.
Continue praying!

Thank you for your kind wishes

Pleasure!☕

@zekanem. It's heartbreaking to read about the economic hardships faced by we Nigerians, as highlighted in your article. The statistics paint a grim picture of poverty and corruption, affecting families like yours and mine. Your resilience in finding ways to cope, such as through Steemit and helping students, is inspiring. It's a reminder of the importance of community and resourcefulness in times of adversity. Let's hope for brighter days ahead for Nigeria and its people.

Yes, we all can only hope for a brighter future, the government can also help in many ways, but they they focus more on things that are less important, I hope God help this country, by touching thr heart of of government to do what's right by Nigeria. Corruption can't be stopped, but I strongly believe it can be reduced to a minimum level with the right government.

Thank you, friend!

I am glad you have learnt from me very well, buying things in bulk saves us alot. And also buying them and stocking when there are less expensive. I am optimistic about the government. I pray that they fix the country soon. Till then we have to try our very possible best to survive.

Yes mom I learnt a lot from you and I am happy because it is what is helping me to survive now. Thank you for those valuable lessons, as we fight to survival I hope the government does it part too.

Thanks for your comment

The economic situation of Nigeria today is really appalling.

Things have become so expensive that if the things that the average family could afford before is a difficulty now.

It's even hard to cope seeing that your mom is a single mom with children.

Like you have mentioned, to cope in this economy, one has to cut down on uneccessary expenses. And prioritize only the important things.

You have vividly captured the situation of the country's economy.

I wish you all the best in this contest.

Yes dear one has to cut down unnecessary expenses, thank you for stopping by.

Hi friend, I can see the situation clearly written here. And unlike yours, you still have a good home were other family members unites together to achieve that great success of fighting back economic hardships with love and being hopeful and optimistic.

There are family here in Nigeria too, that they have to fight alone, and it's usually the hardest part if life, one being the water supply, the husband, the wife, just one person with all of these responsibilities and still struggles to feed!
In times like this, being in harmony with ones family's is the highest blessing or joy I should say, because as you wake up to see your love ones attimes your satisfied for a new day.

May God take away the untold hardships were facing in our country before we know.
Best of luck sir.

Amen dear and God will do it.

You are hard working person, You are working hard on Steemit. If you know other resources please share with me because condition is same of myself too. May I know your mom has taken loan for what purpose? But Yes you do right that you made some plan to deal with situation

Thank you for your compliment. I try my best and leave the rest for God

Yes we can do just hard work and we don't have any thing in our hand. Hope all things will be okay soon

Greetings,
Economic meltdown is one of the recent issue in the country. This condition has made people see this life as a living hell.
How can an employee spend 70% of his or her income on Transportation. At this point, what will that individual have to survive? I hope this issue should be looked into thoroughly. Good luck on your entry.

Everyone has to cut down on their cost of living my bro.
Thanks for stopping by

You may be correct with your statistics or probably having a lower value. I think over 50% of the citizens are below poverty line. The present administration worsened the already collapsed economy, thereby throwing the middle class into the poverty line. It is a terrible situation to cope in the country but just as you mentioned, we need to have multiple streams of income to double up our pocket values and well leave within our means. Success

Thank you for great comment sir. You know these statistics is never a true reflection of true events. During the last election there was a pleasure popular slang that came out "Na statistics we go chop?".

Hahaha, exactly. Have you wondered why we have less of this troubles in the advanced countries? Leadership is the number one problem.

I deviate sir, everyone believes leadership is the problem but I believe we are our problem, out of 200 million people but only less than 10k leaders keeps messing us up. Who appoints this leaders?
We of course.
As for me, the only way we can make things right is to destroy the foundation. The youths have to arise and kill all these old hags rippling the economy because we can't collect them power peacefully, they'll continue to rig and tell you to go to court.

Reason why I didn't support the Obidients, because their principal to me was too cowardly. How can your votes be rigged and your followers want to go to war and you call for peace.

I will stop here. I have left Nigeria to do as they like. I pray to be comfortable and leave this country.

We will never have good leaders, in the university have you seen how common class rep abuse power, sug, dept and faculty president do the same thing. These are our supposed future leaders of tomorrow ooo.

Thank God say tomorrow no dey Everly come.

Smiles... there are foundational problems that are beyond us and the problems just as you've itemized still put back the blame on you. The youths have been so much compromised that forming a consensus isn't easily tenable. It's only a matter of time as the electioneering process isn't the Messiah neither the umpire nor security agencies.

The accomplices in the entire process undermine the prosperity it needs. But notwithstanding, a protest that would trigger a revolution may be underway if this hunger and suffering continues. Hunger and Suffering does not know color Tribe or Religion. God help us.

Amen
