The Nintendo 64 has a unique look to its games, similar to how old school gamers can point out PSOne style games. Corn Kidz 64 is clearly a homage to that look and feel that Nintendo 64 games were known for. Particularly the 3D action platform titles. The game world is a little darker than what we saw dominate the platform, but the aesthetics are there. The cool thing about Corn Kidz 64 is, it is available now on Steam for a very reasonable $6.99.
Capturing the Look and Feel of Nintendo 64
Corn Kidz 64 carries a ton of nostalgia for the mid 90’s era of gaming. 3D platforming was still in its infancy, graphics had a certain edge to them, and it was new to gamers. What is interesting is, as someone that lived through this era at a point where I had my own discretionary money to spend, I could buy more games as they intrigued me. I completely skipped owning a Nintendo 64 for the Saturn (grabbed it on a trade-in deal at EB) and the PlayStation (bought a month before I got my Saturn in late 1996). At the time, I was more into role-playing games and arcade releases.
Still, the Nintendo 64 was in my life, I visited with friends that owned it, we would trade consoles for the weekend, etc. I could easily tell the Nintendo 64 games (that were not cross platform) felt different, played differently. It was interesting, it was more than just the “Nintendo” feel that first party games gave us.
Corn Kidz 64 fits in perfectly from what I have seen. If they dropped this in 1997/1998 it would have probably faired well against the competition.
Keeping Fans Interested
Corn Kidz 64 features one small world, one large world, two linear tower worlds and a hub and bonus stages. It sounds like this is a smaller game and according to the Steam page, it is. Corn Kidz 64 comes in at around four to eight hours of gameplay.
According to How Long to Beat, Mario 64 (the yard stick most 3D platformers are compared to) takes about 12 hours to beat. That puts Corn Kidz 64 on the shorter side to, maybe, the medium length.
For someone like me, a busy adult, four to eight hours to get the whole story, beat the game, and enjoy it, four to eight hours sounds about right. Keep in mind, Corn Kidz 64 is only $6.99 to buy. That is apparently not an introductory price either.
If you remember Bonk from the 16-Bit era, you probably already know ho you will attack enemies in Corn Kidz 64 – with your head. I mean, it fits, you are a goat after all. Trust me, having grown up around goats, they use their heads, A LOT.
