Star Fox Sees Wire Frame Conversion on Super Nintendo

Star Fox, a game that has been on my radar a lot lately, has just seen another mod. This time, wireframe mode. What is great is the additions the fans put into this mod. Recent mods have been implemented making this quite a treat to check out.

Star Fox reminds us of Battlezone

Ever play Battlezone? Not the late 90’s remake by Activision, that weird real time strategy coupled with controlling units. Yeah, forget that. Anyhow, back to Star Fox in wireframe mode.

When I first read the headlines on this one, I was concerned. How will the more complex enemies look? Will they be recognizable? Will the game be fun still? The answer is yes and yes.

The smaller enemies are the ones that lose something in the conversion. The larger ones are clear and easily recognizable. Due to their size, their loss of basic shaded polygons is not a deal breaker. Those little ones though, they are boogers to pick out without their color and shading.

At least they are still extremely easy to dispatch.

Not just wireframe, but other mods too

While the wireframe is awesome, it would be almost moot if this mod did not integrate other mods. Namely, the 21 Mhz mod. Fans get three versions of Wireframe Star Fox –

Original
21 Mhz
21 Mhz + Fastrom

Check out the video above, Wireframe Star Fox is a marvel to see in action. So much to take in with his new visual mode that it is almost disorientating to a degree.

Let me know in the comments below what you think of Wireframe Star Fox. Head over to ROMHacking.net for the patch file. Considering Star Fox is not freely available, legally, I cannot link directly to the game file.

I imagine a wireframe Starfox would look a lot like that old Amiga or Atari ST game, ‘Starglider’.

Pretty neat because Argonaut was behind Starglider and the creation of Star Fox. Just looked at the Wikipedia page for Argonaut and apparently early versions of Star Fox were called SNESGlider. Maybe they intended to port Starglider over to the Super Nintendo?
