Irrawaddy Dolphins
SS from Newspaper

The Irrawaddy Dolphins is endangered animal inhabiting the rivers of Bangladesh. They Lives deep in the water of rivers such as Meghna and Pashur of the Sundarbans. Because of the low number of Irrawaddy Dolphins, people around the world are trying to save them. Only about 5k-6k Irrawaddy Dolphins still live in the Sundarbans but number is very much less than it was. In the cases of these dolphins, they have natural home in the small rivers and canals inside the Sundarbans. Their portions of living areas are steadily shrinking.

What causes habitat and environmental changes so that this animal is threatened with extinction or why this animal has become a typical animal of BD.

Main reasons for the decline of Irrawaddy Dolphins are due to human actions. Water pollution is one big problem because polluted water makes it harder for dolphins and their favorite small fish to survive. Second problem is the boats noise that confuses the dolphins and does not allow them to locate food or move around without difficulty. The dolphins have to also deal with fishing nets which can get them stuck in their fins or snouts in the nets. Dams and other constructions block dolphins movement and make their life difficult. Bangladesh’s natural environment depends on these dolphins. If we save the dolphins, it means we are save the rivers, all the other animal that live there too.

All spots these dolphins live in are protected regions, including the Sundarbans. Its UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sundarbans is large mangrove forest in the world. It is important to keep this area safe for many animals and these dolphins. Many universities, government groups, and NGOs are collaborating to try and save the Irrawaddy Dolphins. On the IUCN Red List these dolphins are listed as Vulnerable and are threatened with extinction.

These Laws and Projects are working to create a safer environment for the Irrawaddy Dolphins. But they are hard to protect completely without public awareness and a life in harmony with nature.
