Animal Welfare

Hello everyone, Best regards to all of you.

I am a teacher who teaches in one of the schools in Indonesia, the theme of the contest in Week 4 has similarities with the material I teach to students who are in elementary school level grade 4. Especially in the first semester of Grade 4, about the relationship between humans and animals and using animals for humans.

If we rewind to the past civilizations that occurred between humans and animals, it can be said that the course of interaction between humans and animals has occurred throughout the civilization itself. Thousands of years in the ecosystem of life, so the existence of humans and animals and the interaction between humans and animals affect each other. So the term is often associated with the food chain, with humans more likely as the main consumer.

However, throughout the interaction between humans and animals, there is also a bond between the two in certain conditions and situations. Humans also use animals as pets with different uses, ranging from emotional bonds based on togetherness formed (eg dogs and cats), to utilization to facilitate human work (eg horses, buffaloes, and elephants).

The most unfavorable for animals is the exploitation that occurs from these interactions so that humans always take advantage of them for themselves without thinking about what impact is felt and received by the animal. But this is different from animals that have long been a source of fulfillment for humans, such as chickens, fish, and other animals that are a source of food for humans.

What do you think about the use of animals for human benefit, such as in the fashion, entertainment and consumer products industries?

This first question makes me think again that millions of animals die or are killed every day, by hunting or by other means to fulfill the human lifestyle in the context of raw materials. Fashion, entertainment, and consumer products are some of the human lifestyles that have the potential or have been proven to be a real action in overexploiting animals, and taking advantage of these actions without thinking about the adverse effects on natural ecosystems and animals.

Based on market demand and human needs, large companies continue to exploit animals in large quantities to meet the needs for raw materials for Fashion, entertainment, and also their consumer products. This action certainly hurts the existence of animals so it has an impact on the environmental ecosystem, the food chain is disrupted and becomes the cause of the extinction of several existing animals. Not to mention the impact on the environment and human life, this will affect the quality of life.

What do you think about the use of animal products in everyday life, such as leather, fur and ivory?

If reviewed from the use of animal resources for humans, the use of meat as a source of protein does not have a major impact on the ecosystem of animals consumed. These animals are easier to breed and have good reproductive abilities, so they are not so disturbing and influential on existing living ecosystems.

Even the use of animal products in everyday life has existed for a long time as a source of food for humans, and some of these animals are also used as clothing materials that are used wisely through the process of breeding and animal husbandry.

What can individuals do to contribute to protecting animals from exploitation?

For me personally who works as a teacher, then the individual way I do to contribute to protecting animals from exploitation is to provide an understanding to the younger generation to come, about the importance of protecting animals from overexploitation. I always reinforce this method with an understanding that is easily accepted by my students, providing an overview of the impacts and problems of excessive exploitation of animals or animals that will only damage the ecosystem and also the quality of human life.

Another thing I do is to not buy and use products that are suspected of being sourced from animal exploitation, by not using and buying them will make the market demand for these needs decrease. The demand in the market will determine the overproduction, thus making the exploitation of certain animals will be more rampant.

However, we must also understand that there are still many animals that are used as a source of food for humans, and these animals are indeed easy to produce human needs in large numbers from year to year. Because the need for food sourced from animals is different from the needs of Fashion and consumer products, it is based on breeding factors or reproduction of animals that are used.

That's all my simple post, this is just my personal opinion. I invited @lil.albab, @shiftitamanna, and @sahmie to participate, best regards to you all.

Hello dear @fantvwiki !

Your hard work to safeguard animals from abuse are outstanding. Educating the next generation is important for bringing about long lasting change. Great work keep it up 👍👍

Hello dear friend, @fantvwiki

  • Nice to know you are a teacher. There is a popular saying in our country that education is the backbone of the nation. And those who have the maximum effort to make this backbone are the teachers. I love more than my heart all the teachers who give us the opportunity to inform and teach us about different things. Nice to know you have such a positive attitude towards animals which is a real thing. But the sad fact is that nowadays there are many bad people who are killing animals illegally for personal gain which is not right at all. If we ourselves first become aware and then we can make others aware then it will be seen that there will be some relief from animal killing. You have done a very nice post with your valuable information which I like and impressed me a lot. And so I wish you success in the competition and wish you all the best.

Best regards from @robin42
