Many species of animals live in diverse ecosystems in that country, and among those animals, a few species that are endemic to Sri Lanka and are facing the threat of extinction.According to the analytical information, 346 species of animals that are facing the threat of extinction in Sri Lanka and are native to Sri Lanka have been identified so far, of which several animal species can be mentioned as follows.
- Sri Lanka dwarf elephant.
- Southern Province Black Monkey
- Mountain tiger
- Sri Lankan Leopard
- turtle
- python
- pit chicken
- pangolin
- Porcupine
- Red Slender Loris
- Barking deer
This mountain tiger can be called as the least distributed animal in Sri Lanka living in the central mountainous areas of Sri Lanka. There are as few as 28 in Sri Lanka. This animal is very popular with people. That is, people tried to kill these animals because their thick fur skin was very valuable. There are also cases where these animals have been caught in the traps used to hunt animals like pigs and died.
And the Kuru elephant, which is unique to Sri Lanka, is an animal that lives in a rather harsh environment and is distributed throughout the various forests of Sri Lanka. But at present they are also under the threat of being disturbed due to human activities. That is, a large number of these elephants are lost to the environment every year due to road accidents due to the construction of highways, railways and villages next to forests.
Animals such as pit chicken, pangolin, porcupine, red slender loris, barking deer are under threat of environmental degradation due to hunting for meat and the capture of predators. These animals can be seen in various areas throughout Sri Lanka.
These animals are very valuable animals in nature and these animals help to maintain the ecological balance in the ecosystems of the world. Therefore, a special legal system is in place in Sri Lanka to prevent harmful activities such as hunting that harm this happiness. This legal system works to protect the environment.
If any animal whose name is recorded in the Red Data Record book is harmed, it is a serious offense and according to the Sri Lankan government, that person will be arrested in accordance with the law and the government will be legally punished with heavy fines and imprisonment.
Therefore, let's all do our part to protect the animals living around the world by showing love and kindness by stopping the unknown human actions.
