Our Bangladesh currently has many endangered animals, among them the Royal Bengal Tiger, Shushuk, and the freshwater crocodile. But today I will introduce to you the Shushuk.

Shushuk is a very ancient animal of our South Asian region, this animal has also lived in Bangladesh since ancient times. This animal lives in the calm, rich and food-rich areas of our country's Padma, Meghna, Yamuna, Brahmaputra and Sundarbans reservoirs.
Prefers to live in clean high places of freshwater rivers or estuaries. Because these places are relatively clean, rich in oxygen and full of small fishes that take them as food. Also likes to stay dry in areas with medium depth, slow currents.
But at present, excessive water pollution, unplanned construction of dams in the river, where the normal flow of the river is disturbed, creating an unfavorable environment for the survival of the dung beetles. Moreover, they are losing a lot of lives due to the current nets of the fishermen. In the past, the big fresh water rivers of our country were full of shushu, but at present, due to the unfavorable environment for shushu, a survey has found that there are a total of 425 shushu in the Sundarbans, Padma and Yamuna rivers. However, more research and manpower is needed to get the exact number, said people involved with the survey.
In order to maintain the balance of the biodiversity of Bangladesh, government and private institutions are working regularly to enact many regulations as well as to implement them. Among these some important rules are mentioned below:-

• In the interest of conservation and safety of wildlife, shushuk is declared as a protected animal in the Act of 2012. Where swindling, killing is mentioned as a legally punishable offense and announcements are made to bring the criminals under the law and give severe punishment.
• The River Protection Commission Act of 2013 encouraged everyone to come forward to keep the river clean, which has played a role in the habitat of the shishuk.
• Sundarban and Halda River Protection Act has also been enacted for drought protection.
Moreover, private NGO institutions are also raising awareness among people about Shushuk through various programs regularly.
